I am going to say somewhere close to 10,000 either just above or just below. If you want an exact number, I will say 10014.32. I say this because I feel that the actions of most governmental authorities are attempting to avert a complete breakdown of the financial system and that these actions will gradually restore confidence and hope which is required for people willing to invest. The return of just a small amount of confidence will result in much of the sidelined cash returning to the market, in my humble opinion. Needless to say, I am likely to be entirely wrong.

70k jobs lost today. I'm confidence that stagflation is going to hurt and I hope the chafing doesnt last too long.

well when the government thinks spending 1T+ is going to help i think we're going to remain at current levels for a while. they either have to take more money from us or print more which means we have less buying power

I voted the last field and unfortunately, I cannot add more fields to accommodate the new lows. My point prediction is 5650.00 by year end.

I am in MJ's camp.

a short term bump seems likely here.... how many times have you heard "oh, it can't get any lower!!!!" but buyer beward...

only problem is that there is no good news that can propel the markets higher any time soon....

I am very disturbed by the fact that none of the treasury/fed/president people(s) spoke to help calm the markets today.

Im voting somewhere near 10000, staying optimistic is key, yet sometimes not realistic... in this scenario i believe reconstruction and the help of newly reformed financial sector will boost us up to these levels.

Trust me, i have my doubts as well!

6500 or lower.
I just don't believe that spending will get us out of this. Overspending got us into the recession, (along with other factors) and it makes me numb that we are just printing and printing money into the abyss.

I am never a pessimistic person, but I am still sticking to my 6500 or lower choice. The Federal Budget has topped $1 Trillion since the last time I posted. We are in a suckers rally now and by late fall, I have this nasty feeling that things will look even worse than last year. :coffee::smxE:

I have utter confidence in my ability to predict the markets:

I will be the first to admit I am CLUELESS when it comes to knowing where the market is going to go.

(in fact, my cluelessness is an integral part of our PLAN, if you can believe that!)

SO I can, with utter confidence, accurately predict that at the end of 2009 . . .

. . . I will be JUST AS CLUELESS about where the markets will be.

Again, some would see this as a problem.

For me, it's just like having a disability: I learn from it, and overcome/compensate for it by developing other parts of me.

Here's an interesting video I've found about the future of our economy and markets.

Thanks for posting Randall. I am still trying to figure out what "Lmes" means.

I have read some studies on consumer deleveraging and what I found out looks frightening.

I will let the chart speak for itself.

I don't know why that word got distorted, but it should have said "times" not "Lmes"

the chart you posted paints a crazy scenario indeed. But it's actually already outdated because the debt now stands at 522% of GDP as of this week. Every month/week more Treasuries are sold and that adds to our debt at alarming rates.

But, as consumer savings begins to perk up, we can imagine that these monies just may be transferred into equities eventually. Interest rates are far too low to keep in the bank and there aren't a whole lot of other alternatives out there.

and I forgot that the gov't actually revised the GDP downwards just last week so I am sure the percentage is even higher yet!

augh.
