I've been watching some of Rob Walling's video about finding ideas for a SaaS business, and from his survey, it seemed like only 3% or 5% (forgot which one) started a successful SaaS in a market where they didn't know anything about. Is this true?
I get that it's easier if you have market knowledge, but from his stats, it makes it seems like it's almost impossible if you don't have prior market knowledge but I don't believe that. It feels that it should be possible to enter a new market if you talk to people, ask their pain points, and stuff so I'm thinking maybe those stats are wrong, but I could be totally wrong there, he knows a lot more than I do.
He said that I think it was almost 70% of businesses idea came from people finding something at work, related to their industry which I guess makes sense since you already know the market. It makes me think like how MJ found the idea for the limo business in that same market but is it that unlikely that people can start a successful SaaS in a market where they know very little about?
Thank you!
Claude
