An introduction to me, and...
I want to make an invention and have little clue how to execute this idea.

Hello everyone,

Having just finished the Millionaire Fastlane , I was taken by the amount of value directly taken from the Fastlane Forum. It is an amazing opportunity to not only know about this forum, but to now to be a part of it too.

Introduction

I am a 19 year old male. My entire life has been set up for me to succeed in the slowlane, and I'm eternally grateful to my parents who made this a real possibility for me. I am currently a 2nd year medical student and, god-willing, have a job in front of me that can take care of the monetary side of things whilst allowing me to exercise my passion of creating a positive change in the sphere of healthcare.

However, my dream vision was always to have this as a part-time passion that I work to enjoy myself in, not to make my life earnings from. Detaching money from the experience of healthcare is my ultimate goal, as it would allow me to truly treat medicine as a passion and dedicate more time to my family. While medicine has always been a passion for me, I look at my mother work as a health professional for hours on end, only to come home complaining of aches, mental strain, and overall stress which I can see eat her alive day by day. This is not how I want to be living my life.

With the fastlane, I see a big opportunity to maximise what I have of my life. I see potential that feel the burning desire to tap into. What a shame it would be to live this life while leaving so many things on the table.

Request for Advice

I want to make an invention. Specifically, I want to innovate something regarding a new idea for gym equipment.

An issue with this plan I am already running into is that other gym equipment currently on the market can be seen as 'similar in design'. However, these equipments will merely serve as the foundation for my idea. Though, I do see multiple companies selling very similar forms of equipment to each other, so a part of me thinks that this area is not so cutthroat and ruthless when it comes to suing for similarity (I may be dead wrong). While I'm not expecting any lawyers to be lurking around these forums, any advice on potentially circumnavigating this road bump is appreciated.

The majority of my questions come in the execution phase of this idea. Unfortunately, school never really teaches you how to, well, invent something.

Below, I will outline a roadmap of the steps I see in order for this invention to happen.

  1. Idea formulation
  2. Creating a prototype
  3. Testing this prototype
  4. Refining this prototype
  5. Attaining an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certificate [I was told this was a necessary step]
  6. Patenting the idea
  7. Marketing and Advertisement to relevant stakeholders
  8. Selling [either on a unit by unit manufacture basis, or selling to a higher company as a one time payment, or getting some sort of small commission for every unit sold by another company that buys manufacturing rights? Not really sure what options I have but this is far down the track]

If I have missed anything in this process, it would be greatly appreciated if you could let me know. Additionally, if anyone has had any experience in the execution of creating an invention, your words of advice and experience is worth its weight in gold to me.

Thank you for reading so far. Any sort of advice on any step of this process is very much appreciated. Keep it up, champs!

The idea I have is more so putting already existing ideas in place, refining them, adding them together, and finally allowing them to give the user the ability to do a movement that conventional machines or setups don't allow you to do.

As for size, I'm not sure that 3D Printers could handle this sort of load. I'm looking to make something that is larger than the human body as it'll need to be able to support their weight along with weight from a barbell. A 3D printer however could be exactly what I need to build some "parts" to the "puzzle" of whatever this unit will look like in the end. Thanks for the suggestion!

Build it at 1/10 scale or similar. That way you don’t have to spend as much time designing it.

Welcome to the FLF!

As far as idea formulation, what specific problem/pain-point in the gym industry are you trying to solve?

If I missed it in your post, my apologies.

It's not a pain point in the realm of fitness yet, but with the direction that the industry is going (especially on social media), I believe it will be a pain point soon, particularly for athletes.

More and more people are finding the value of doing some isolation work on otherwise neglected body parts. While isolation work is fine, it's a bit inconvenient. It would be much better to be able to do 1 exercise instead of 3, do it in a way that is scalable as a compound movement (such as the squat or deadlift), and still have the isolation variants as accessory tools to work on weak points.

This is a weak point I came to myself when performing some of these isolation exercises and asking myself, "If only I could do this all in one go." If I, a non-athlete regular gym-goer, have this issue, then I can imagine that many aspiring athletes and personal trainers may be thinking the same thing.

This how you figure out how to execute any idea:
(1) Determine how much of the time and money investment you are willing to put into learning how to make X product / service. If it'll take you YEARS and / or require you to break the bank in order to do so, then it's not worth it.
(2) If doing (1) is not viable, then see if you can afford to hire / rent someone's or some other company's expertise in making X product or service.

If you cannot do either (1) or (2), then sorry to say this but, you do not have a business and will need to move on with finding another idea that you will have Founder market fit for

Awesome!

How many people have you interviewed/approached to validate this idea?
