If you want to know how to be happier, continue reading…
If you want to know why your brain is design to keep you from being happy, continue reading…

Here’s the thing that we don’t learn in school…

At least I didn’t learn this…

My parents didn’t teach it to me either…

Happiness is a management issue…

Let’s be clear about that. We must choose to be happy and must work at it actively.

Why?

Because… our brains are designed to keep us safe, NOT happy…

It’s simple biology.

Our brain is setup to look for threats – you know, grizzly bears that want to have us for lunch…

And in our modern world, that’s anything that could be a threat to our survival…

Psychologists call this a ‘negative bias’…

That means we want to hear about bad things… or at least pay more attention to it…

Think about all the news headlines you see or read…

We pay more attention to the shooting halfway across the country than the fundraiser for hunger down the street…

But it’s not your fault…

We’re programmed this way…

And marketers, news broadcasters, media all know this…

The use it to their advantage to keep us hooked to the negative news…

Which keeps us constantly in a state of alertness aka stressed out…

So, then we wonder why we’re not happy…

It’s because happiness doesn’t sell…

When’s the last time you heard a happy, content, grateful person say, “I really need the latest iPhone 5000”

HINT – they don’t…

So, how do we escape the negativity and shift into positivity?

Well, it’s not all about positive thinking… rather it’s about POSITIVE ACTION…

Rather than trying to control our thoughts, it’s 100x easier to control our behavior and actions…

And guess what?

Those behaviors can actually influence our thoughts and beliefs…

That means… over time… we can be happier just by doing certain things…

Here’s a few daily exercises can help us live a happier and healthier life…

Daily Exercises:

  • Give back – Find ways each day to give, be kind or help a person, animal, or the planet. We experience the ‘Helper’s high’ when we give – increased endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin while decreasing cortisol (the stress hormone). Google- “365 give challenge”
  • Gratitude Journal – At the end of each day, capture one thing that made you smile, one thing that you’re grateful for, and one thing you did well. Recalling and reflecting on good things, especially before sleeping, is a way to ensure that you sleep better and are happier.
  • Mindfulness – Happiness exists in the moment and by being more present, we can experience more happiness. Oftentimes, we’re focused on the past or the future and this keeps us from being present. Spend at least 5 minutes each day practicing an active meditation. This could be as simple as sitting upright in a chair and counting 100 inhales of your breath (start with getting to 20 first if 100 is too hard).
  • Real Relationships – spend 1-2 minutes sending a thoughtful note or text to a friend to show your appreciation. Quality of relationships have been shown to be one of the true sources of happiness in our lives. You can do this by appreciating the people in your life and having ‘real’ conversations with them. Skip the small talk and go deep. It’s refreshing and meaningful.
  • Avoid Comfort Seeking – Instead of trying to be more comfortable and doing things that are easy, push yourself out of your comfort-zone and find things that challenge and stretch you. When you do hard things, you feel a sense of accomplishment and pride which transforms into higher levels of confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. This all leads to a happier state of being.
One of my goals for 2022 and beyond is to be intentionally happier…

So, I spent a few hours researching and studying what the experts have to say…

I summed it up in to these five exercises and I’m sharing it here because this is my way of giving back to all my friends and family…

Maybe you already do some of these things…

But my challenge to you is to be more intentional about your happiness…

See if adding even one of these exercises can improve your life…

Hope you have your best year ever… and as always...

Be Blessed!

With regards to "Giving Back", what I have recently done is I save a dollar a day(I just started saving this month). This is what I call my "Charity fund", where its money sits in its own account. Its purpose is for giving back to my family, friends and my community. As it it grows everyday, suddenly, I can pay for that strangers coffee, take my parents out to dinner at NO COST to them, etc. This is great for training ourselves to be more selfless. I literally only save a dollar everyday, so everyone can do exactly what i'm doing. Next week will be my first time pulling from the fund :) I'm taking a few friends out to eat at no cost them :D

That's awesome! I love how you've taken something nominal (a dollar a day) and turned it into something to intentionally bless someone. Great stuff!
