just like no one's copying McDonalds which is technically possible. it's pointless copying from scratch a business when the original is already running well unless you can add some innovations beyond the original. so you always have to be innovating your own business not to be caught up by your competitions.

but if you get extremely unlucky that someone more competent than you accidentally comes across your website, appreciates its potential values, decides to steal it, build a better copycat product in a short time even before yours get some attentions then I think you won't have much to do in this case.

but I'm not even close to being an entrepreneur yet. it's only what I learned from books and the internet. hope real entrepreneurs answer this so that I also can learn from them.

I learned a long time ago that unique is subjective.

Just do the website. Worry about copycats later. This kind of thinking will get you to do absolutely nothing, ever.

In perspective, i’m working on a product that 200% will be replicated. I’m not even sure I could patent such a thing. The only thing I can do is establish myself as the authority and first one to have done it.

Work so hard to make your homepage excellent, that no one will do that work again. Than be the best and eat the copycats

You’d be surprised how easy it is to copy a homepage and edit some things here and there. If we’re talking about them kind of copycats.

I have only built some shitty homepages with wp the last 2 years.
But back in 1996, I copied some homepages just by downloading them, changing some words and uploaded with my domain.
That was easy than.
You think its so easy still? I didn’t know that. My knowledge nowadays isn’t up to date any more.

Go for it. In the technology space, everything is always just a copy and paste away from duplication. If that's all it takes to completely destroy your idea is that a foundation you want to build a house on anyway?

Besides that, the odds of someone legitimately stealing your idea before it's gained real traction is low. The type of person to do that would wait until your concept has been proven already, they wouldn't risk wasting their own time. Fortunately for you, the more traction you build the harder it is for someone to steal it. Just like Facebook, you can copy all the code, but you can't copy the network.

Differentiate between website and business.

Website is something you build and no one sees it or everyone tries to copy (happens).
Business is something that you build and its not that easy copy but many, ofc, will try.

Besides that, the odds of someone legitimately stealing your idea before it's gained real traction is low.
Unless your idea is Snapchat. It was stolen in a snap!*

*Long story short, one of 3 guys had idea,
he told two others about it before doing anything,
two others decided that trio is too much and they ditched him.

Good point, however the key there is "before doing anything" which is why my post started with "Go for it." lol

If you are totally serious in making it a career of it you should speak with an attorney to see what legal things you do before you start. For example, in the US you only have a limited time, like months to file a formal copyright. You still get automatic protection without this but if someone copies it you can't claim punitive damages or something like that. A good attorney will know the details.

Since I am struggling with issues like this, here is my motto RN : DO it first, overthink later.
Not launching anything because you worry about hypothetical issues made me loose 3 years of progress. Now my phone/tablet/pc and even bracelet have the same message pinned on them : JUST DO IT !

Things do not happen with a click of mouse. It takes time.

Before you get enough attention that is worth copying I am sure that not only you have enough traffic, you are also making quite some money from it. People copies ideas that work (make money).

So by then you should have enough knowledge and capital to invest in your business to be ahead of the game.

What value are you bringing to the table vs someone that will copy your website? As a consumer, It's all about the value/$ that I am getting out of a transaction, with your business.

As an example, there are many Apple smartwatch copy-cats out there, but there is only one Apple Watch. The reason why people are willing to fork over 4x more for an Apple Watch, versus purchasing the exact same watch from China, for less than $200, is because they've bought into Apple's value, both as a brand and as a business. Apple has their trust.

Worry about value-offering, copyright what you can, and the rest will play itself out.

Also worth mentioning that it will take time. They didn’t gain everybody’s trust that quick. It took years and years.

Hi,
I think that this is the risk of launching new business ideas or new products.
A great option is to inform about license and copyright that you can obtain on your idea. However, as always happen in business, someone will copy your idea and just change some features to not be pursued by law.
This is the risk, but you will gain all the early adopters users.
