Hello everyone,

I have this idea of creating my personal website for website development, potentially evolving in the future (after my Business Management degree) into Business Consulting. I have a few questions:
  1. Do you think I should cold-call/showing up to companies to advertise my service? I would avoid spending lots of money on Google Ads at the initial stage
  2. Should I design my business card? If so, any ideas on what to write on it/layout?
  3. Even after my degree, I see the process of becoming a consultant as quite daunting. The best consulting corporation put their candidates through very though interviews (case interviews, giving you a business scenario to solve) so I was wondering how I could draw customers to me?
  4. Also, what framework would you recommend for consulting? I guess I'll need templates, a set strategy etc...
  5. Any books you recommend on the topic? In alternative, is there any consultant on the forum who can talk me through the process?
  6. Legal stuff: how about legal contracts I give my clients? And invoices?
  7. I have an idea for a book. It's about personal development, exploring strategies to boost productivity. My Unique Selling Point (USP) is that I can back up every single approach with studies/science, rather than slamming the reader nice words with meaningless content. In short, it'll be a scientifically proven method. If you ever read Brain Rules by John Medina, you get an idea. Should I start the book now?I don't know what the process to go through would be (editing, revising, publishing etc). Also, my main concern is credibility: because of the lockdown here in the UK I can't practise what I preach (some of the techniques involve weight lifting), so how do I bypass this issue?
  8. I also have an idea for a Youtube channel streaming a 24/7 radio, tried to look up on the web to understand how to do it but I'm still confused. Can anyone help?
It's quite a lot to go through but I hope there's someone out there to help me out in my life quest! :)

Many thanks,

Matt

When you go to the restaurant and look at everything on the menu, at some point you have to decide what you are having. Once that decision has been made and you hand back the menu, you don't think about the other things on the menu anymore do you?

So your menu above is quite large hence your confusion.

Pick one thing eg Web Design and focus on getting a customer. Don't worry about Business Cards or Invoices. Until you have done the work there is no invoice and you can just write a simple one on MS Word or whatever to start with.

If you live in a smallish place just walk into local businesses and introduce yourself. Get a feel for the business climate. Who's who and who does what.

Like the Insurance guys of old. Every month they would drop in and say Hi and eventually they would have the entire street signed up.

Dan

PS: I wouldn't really be thinking of Business Consulting at this stage .

A few updates: spoke with the university's business adviser and she's going to email me a few templates for invoices/contracts. I guess it's time to start working on my website.

I have a question, though: how do I bypass the credibility problem? Despite I have a fair amount of knowledge in data analysis, operations, marketing etc etc I'm not graduated yet, so my worry is that clients will look suspiciously at my services. Any idea?
