Hi fellow fastlaners!
I'm very pleased to make your acquaintance. I'm creating this thread as a diary for myself to document my progress and hopefully share my learnings with everyone else here on this forum who may be thinking about starting web design. Things are a little messy at the moment since I am just starting off and putting the pieces together, but I have faith that I will work through all of these pitfalls as I persevere with this.
I am 24 years old and currently based in Australia. Currently, I work a full-time job as an engineer and my eventual goal is to break away from this job and become completely self-employed so that I can move out of my parents house and build the life of freedom that I truly desire.
I joined @Fox's web design course 4 months ago and have been working 7 days a week (on weekends + weeknights after working & training) to scale this up (whilst monitoring and self regulating for burnout as well). Fox has been incredibly helpful and attentive to all of my questions thus far - I cannot thank him enough. At the moment, I am looking to build up my portfolio before scaling up and approaching business owners who can pay me more and hence, result in higher paying projects.
Currently, I have one customer who is paying off a maintenance package for $100/month for 12 months and I am coming close to finishing up a second portfolio project for another client that I met during one of my martial arts classes. Both websites have been built with Wordpress elementor and currently remains my website construction software of choice. At the moment, here is how things are looking up:
1) I currently do not have my own personal website as I am still collecting testimonials. I have chosen an agency name ahead of time (WaveTownMedia.com), but am yet to release this website as of yet.
2) Currently, I only have one paying customer for a maintenance package for me to keep her website up and running. I do plan on making this offer to my current client once the site has been finished.
Things that I still need to work on/figure out:
1) Content marketing strategy (preferably on instagram) to help attract more clients with a direct link to my own website.
2) Legalising the business (registering for an ABN, etc).
3) Improving my maintenance package service and crafting a more compelling pitch.
4) Getting over my imposters syndrome and charging more for projects.
Thanks all, I expect this to keep evolving and developing as time goes on!
