You're welcome! I hope it works for you.
Magnesium works for me, too. Those dreams though! Sometimes I have to wake up just to get out of them, lol

You know, now that you mention it, my dreams have been more vivid. I think I remember something about magnesium and lucid dreaming as well. Hmmm. I'll have to look into that.

I might get hit on the head for mentioning this, but have you watched the Game Changer documentary on Netflix ?

I'm far from being a vegetarian, but the info shared in the documentary is quite interesting and closely related to fatigue/sleepiness, lack of energy coming from a diet.

No hammer emoji otherwise I would. LOL jk

I've heard so much against this film from sources I trust that it's crazy. If I can, I'll post links.

Tom DeLauer had a really good video on it. I'll see if I can find the link. Maybe Dr. Ken Berry too? Not sure but when I get the chance I'll dig them up.

Like many have said, you can't keep relying on caffeine for energy for longer than a day or two. If you are too tired and have to have caffeine, then you can't have it!

Yes, adrenal fatigue is real. I am recovering from it. Some also call it Epstein-Barr virus, Mononucleosis, etc. It is extremely common among athletes. In the business world it is known as burnout.

Fix your:
1. Hydration
2. Sleep
3. Nutrition
4. Exercise.

In this exact order of priority.

1. Hydration:

I used to drink 4 liters a day. Way more than was recommended for my average weight. I was always thirsty. Turns out I was not consuming enough of electrolytes. I was pissing more than I was drinking. When I started feeling thirsty, I decided to cut down on salt intake. I should have increased the salt intake instead. Then add sports, work, gym, stress, etc. This is how it all went downhill.

A year ago I discovered Pedyalite. It is easy to drink and it does not leak out of me right away like plain water does. Drink it first thing in the morning or during the day, then plain water in the evening.

When you drink plain water, make sure it is either spring water or tap water (of a good quality). Do not drink distilled water, non-spring bottled water, or caffeinated carbonated drinks. They deplete you of minerals.

2. Sleep

I have learned more about sleep than I should have, and I am still working on that.

Make sleep a life priority. Set an alarm to go to bed. Sleep for 7-8 hours. Do not sleep longer than 8-9 hours, especially if you have problems going to bed the following night. There is a thing called "sleep hygiene". Follow the same sleep schedule every night.

Keep the room cool, quiet, well-ventilated, no light, dark curtains on windows. Wear ear plugs and a blind if they help.

Track your sleep. Once it improves, everything else will improve too. Yes, ideally you need close to 2 hours of deep sleep.

If you think you may have a problem with snoring, get a snoring tracking app, such as SnoreLab. Snoring will make you tired in the morning. There are easy fixes for snoring too.

Sleep doctors around here always test for sleep apnea first. I think they are crazy, but those who have serious sleep issues might indeed have that.

I am a night owl. I am fooling myself to go to bed early by setting my watch 2 hours ahead. I am in Arizona now, but I live on Eastern Standard Time. It helps me get 2 extra hours of sleep every night.

3. Nutrition

Find a way to keep your energy levels steady throughout the day. This means keeping steady blood sugar levels.

Small and balanced meals every 2-3 hours works very well.

Keto works for some, but it does not work indefinitely, people have to get off of it eventually. They add back fruits and carbs.

Avoid sugar. Never over-eat. Keep your carb intake moderate or low. If you need coffee, then you can't have it. I love coffee, but I drink it only when I am fully rested and usually only during the day.

Carefully watch what you eat before bed. You do not want to be full, restless, dehydrated, or hungry at night.

4. Exercise

Find a low-intensity routine that you like to do.

Go for a walk, or walk the dog for 30-60 minutes every day. Go for a bike ride. You can do some jogging or light running, if it improves and does not mess up your night sleep.

Avoid high-intensity workouts that raise your heart rate above the aerobic levels. That can mess you up bad. You are better off doing nothing at all than doing those. You can start doing them again only after your sleep improves.

Good luck!

Stop.

Do the basic stuff right.

Drink enough water. Get a good night's sleep every day. Eat enough but not too much. Workout at least 30 minutes every day. Get your health sorted.

Then, try experimenting with different foods/diets. Many people stand by keto. Other by meat only. Other by plants only. Experiment and see.

Taking stimulants is only going to worsen your problems. It's a shortcut which backfires very, very bad.

Not really a stimulant but Ashwagandha helps me so much... but you really need to find a brand that provides a quality product. A lot of the Ashwagandha supplements are garbage hence the low prices. Good quality Ashwagandha is expensive to source.

I take Ashwagandha, it is an adaptogen that can normalize sleeping so that you get proper rest. I think that is the most important thing. It also helps with clarity and focus during the day and feels like real natural energy coming from me. And ever since I started taking it all my brain fog is gone too. Maybe give it a try there are a bunch of brands on Amazon when you do a search. I use the Mana Spring Brand now

I feel like my energy levels are often low and I can't concentrate as I would like to. Coffee doesn't do much for me any more (I take it with maca once a day which gives me a little boost but nothing spectacular) so I'm thinking about taking something else that hopefully won't be harmful for my health altogether.

What are your experiences?

I'd suggest trying a switch to tea (black tea is my go-to now that I quit coffee) and doing an analysis on your diet. If you're consuming any sugery snacks switch to something like almonds that give a more sustained and stable boost in energy. Also a quick set of pushups or jog around the building does wonders.

Best of luck

Bravo to you for keeping that up 6 days a week! I've been doing some 7am-1am days but can't manage more than two or three a week.

I don't have a choice really, sometimes I take a small 15-20 minutes nap during the day and I found that it can be effective if done properly (if I'm tired enough to fall asleep but also disciplined enough to not oversleep), which is not always the case.

I'm also into bio/brain hacking a little so I've done medicinal mushrooms (NOT the hallucinogenic ones, lol), red reishi and lion's mane. Stuff like that.

That's interesting, I need to do a bit more research on that!

Please do! It may take some time for it to start to help. I don't remember it taking too long though, certainly not longer than a few days. For me it was like 2 to 3 days and I started seeing a difference. I have a sleep tracker and it showed up in that and I could feel it as well.

Also, please please please! Only take what's recommended on the bottle. I don't want to see anyone get hurt.

EDIT: By the way, I started a thread over here: O/T: HEALTH - Magnesium for better sleep

If you'd like to post your experience with the magnesium.

Very interesting, I'll check out that thread.

I might get hit on the head for mentioning this, but have you watched the Game Changer documentary on Netflix ?

I'm far from being a vegetarian, but the info shared in the documentary is quite interesting and closely related to fatigue/sleepiness, lack of energy coming from a diet.

I'll have a look t it but I don't think I could do a vegetarian diet tbh, it looks like the effort to get all nutrients out of plants is huge, and of course I wouldn't put my daughter through that so I would have to keep cooking meat anyway.

Obligatory "try yerba mate and thank me later" comment by me. Get everything on Amazon, read how to make a good one to make your yerba last.

I spent a year in Argentina some time ago and I loved the yerba mate. It did give me a big boost at the beginning (the first day I was so high that couldn't sleep until about 5AM even after going out for a run), but eventually my body got used to it just like to coffee. I still drink it occasionally.

Thanks, I never heard of it, I see that they call it the "Indian Ginseng". I will also need to try it.

I tend to avoid sugar but sometimes I do go for a few cookies here and there, not too often though. I prefer almods, nuts, peanuts, pistachio, and all kinds of dry fruits for a snack, maybe I should try to take the unsalted versions though because the salt levels tend to be very high.

Is Pedyalite similar to Gatorade?

Yes but with 6g of sugars vs 34g. :p If you are going to be working out you'll be okay though. Just don't do Gatorade if you are sedentary.

Just take <magic pill> and do <magic activity> and start eating <magic diet> and you won't have to worry about sleep until your nervous system is a complete wreck. It will be great.

Seriously though, tell the X to shut her hole or call you in the morning when you're awake. Don't do phone calls or email within an hour of bed time if they make you too nervous to sleep. Consider not looking at screens of any kind within some period of bed time, like 1 hr or 30 mins. You'll think "but this is my relaxation time!" but then when you actually get enough sleep every night you'll realize there is nothing that replaces sleep for relaxation and anxiety control. 5 hours is the equivalent of applying sandpaper to your nerves. It makes life not fun. Sleep makes everything easier and better. Go to sleep.

Get off the coffee(I used to be a pretty big coffee drinker), I love coffee but only do decaf these days with the occasional real coffee on some random days.

Honestly get off all stimulants and start an exercise regimen and get outdoors and your energy should be good.
I agree with get off coffee.

Coffee NEVER gives me energy during the morning/day...in fact it gives me insomnia every single time at bed time.

Not only that, coffee always makes me feel extremely sad- almost like it makes me feel depressed.

I realized that I don't like altering my mind/mood/energy... I don't like any stimulants at all (alcohol/smoking). I just like feeling normal.

I crash so hard off of coffee when I stop drinking it...I become entirely exhausted for at least 3-4 days straight once I don't maintain coffee consumption....Its like a withdrawal period.

I can't handle coffee or alcohol well- so I usually don't have it often at all... I love the taste of coffee with cream. Luckily for me in this aspect I don't have an addictive personality at all... I can have a cup of coffee if I crave it, and then walk away from it for months or years like its nothing.

Drinking tons of water gives me energy.

Its "Nespresso" brand coffee in the vertuo pods in particular that makes me feel so sad and depressed...

Pedyalite is a solution of electrolytes with a small amount of glucose. Lightly sweetened liquids are absorbed better than plain water. It is most often given to babies who have dehydration due to diarrhea or fever. You should have something similar in your local pharmacy in Spain in the baby nutrition section.

Pedyalite is also great for hangovers, but I do not have that issue.

I buy it is a powder form, orange flavor. The small packets are easier to carry and keep around than large bottles, and you can always have them with you anywhere you travel.

Gatorade is supposed to be similar. It was awesome until like 20 years ago when it still was a sports hydration drink. It used to be thick, salty, slightly sweet, barely any sugar, had a nasty aftertaste, but it went down the throat so easily when you were actually thirsty. Then they popularized it -- reduced the concentration of electrolyte and increased sugar and various acidic flavors. It became another soft drink. It is better than water for hydration, but I can't drink it much anymore -- too sweet, too acidic, and not enough of electrolytes. If I drink it when I do sports, I will feel sick. There are better sports hydration drinks out there.

not sure I can get it legally nowadays where I live (Spain).

From a quick google search - Spain has access to prescription methylphenidate for ADHD. Also called Concerta. My son is on it (for ADHD, not lack of energy). It's a very safe, well studied stimulant that produces effects similar to Adderall.

It feels like forced wakefulness and you'll become hyper focused on tasks VERY easily - which can be a benefit if planned for (working on a business, getting boring shit done quickly without distraction, etc) or a detriment (spending 6 solid hours going down a wikipedia rabbit hole or engaged with social media, etc).

Personally I'd agree with others that your first step is to completely examine your diet, health and fitness first (including blood tests as necessary) before looking for a magic pill though.

No. I drink some tea, but mostly herbal. I don't believe in taking anything. I don't even drink sodas. Health issues are way too important to mess with. I had life-threatening issues when I was young. I learned that being sick really sucks!

I don't have the solution for you, but I can share my experience:

Exercise made the biggest impact. I'm so full of energy in the mornings and I don't get tired so easily.

Getting up at 6am to work on the important stuff before going to work. This has the side-effect of being tired around 10pm and exercise in the evening also helps with sleep.

A bit of relax before going to bed to avoid having the brain too active and screw sleep.

Changing my diet so something close to a vegetarian (I'd call it close to traditional Mediterranean diet, really). Very little meat and fish (both made me had bad digestions and reflux), zero industrial sugar, pretty much no salt (I suspect it raised my blood pressure), lots of legumes, veggies, and carbs (yes, carbs, one of the pillars of the diets that make Mediterranean and Japanese people live longer that the average) but only from whole grains, so no refined grains (I think white flour screwed my digestive system too), as little processed food as possible, also no saturated fats that come from animal sources because they'll clog your arteries, and lots of fruits (careful with sugar levels though). My body just feels so much better after the change and most of my digestive problems have gone away. Other people swear by Keto and it might work fine, but I'll stick to what's been proven by tons of 90 yo's instead of unbalanced diets meant to treat epilepsy, as I'm not an epileptic (neither are most people).

And, finally, having a purpose finished boosting my energy levels.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

EDIT: Grammar.

Sleep hygiene is also something I definitely need to work on. Yesterday I was so exhausted that I put my daughter in bed, lied down next to her to read something and fell asleep with her after a while without waking up until about 3AM, after which I went to my bed and kept on sleeping until the morning. Not sure yet whether the magnesium had something to do with it but I finally got some decent sleep this week.

That's another reason I can't really get off coffee, I like the taste very much. I tend to buy good quality grain coffee and prepare an espresso or cappuccino in my automatic coffee machine. Maybe I should swith to decaf, but I'm not sure if the problem is the caffein.

There are better sports hydration drinks out there.

Ok I remember I once bought something similar when I had gastroenteritis, it was a powder to be mixed with water. I need to check it out.

Exactly, I need a prescription, I don't think I will get it if I don't have a justified reason to take it.

I went to the doctor yesterday and she sent me for a full blood and urine test, let's see what comes out of it.

No. I drink some tea, but mostly herbal. I don't believe in taking anything. I don't even drink sodas. Health issues are way too important to mess with. I had life-threatening issues when I was young. I learned that being sick really sucks!

Yes, health should always be the highest priority. I've also seen many people messing up their bodies and their lives with crap (steroids, cocaine, etc.) so I tend to be very careful with what I take.

Magnesium can help with nerves, cramps, sleepnessness, and even a propensity for seizures in some people. It's a good mineral for regulating the nervous system. If you think it helps you sleep, keep it up. Organic forms like magnesium glycinate are more bioavalable; inorganic forms like magnesium oxide are less bioavailable.

I know it's a long post, but I feel all of this is important to share.

I also take amphetamines, but never habitually. Maybe one month per year, low doses.
Like Johnny said: it does really improve performance for the moment.
Especially if you have a certain kind of ADD, it can be like day and night.

However, the addiction WILL sneak up on you if you are not extrémely careful with it.
Hence one should not allow him-/herself to make this into a ritual without seeing a psychiatrist.
At least not until one has lots and lots of experience with using it.
It is some nasty shit. Do not underestimate this stuff.

And never, èver, start snorting it habitually. Just don't do it.
It isn't worth the attacks on your nose and the dramatically increased risk of addiction.
Espècially if you really do have ADD, and may want to use this as a medicine for the better part of your life.

And even though it's (way) more safe to oralize it, don't get seriously high on it like that habitually either.
As it'll still dominate your life if you don't know what you're doing.

Also know that, like has been said before: The energy gains and momentum you "get" must àlways be repaid.
Thus you'll be lying in bed depressed for days if you abused it in whatever way. Which isn't too hard to do.

It's a loan, just like with money.
And it WILL come to collect, even when you really don't want it to.
Unless ofcourse, you take a 4th bump... .....who needs sleep?
Which, I don't have to tell you, is an un(pre)scripted fastlane to hell.

That is, IF you don't have the awareness and the discipline that is required to stay on track long-term.
And I might add to that "experience", because I bet you that even your meditation guru *could* get themselves entrenched with this. So be vèry careful if you're going to experiment with it.

Stick with coffee.
I've heard some good things about taking 200mg L-Theanine before coffee.
It ought to take away some of the jitters and tension, while NOT taking away the energy boost. Not at all.

Go for a run and/or practice meditation. Fix the diet.
The latter three will, after a while, do many of the same things for you as AMP and coffee do.
... Except this time it isn't a bloody loan. It is extra.

Wake up early enough to keep your circadian rhythm happy.
That'll give you lots of energy, because you won't miss your cortisol boost.

I used to be an evening person simply because I never dared to experiment with 5:30 am.
Logic being that if 7:30 didn't really work for me, then why would 5:30 suddenly do?!

I couldn't have been more wrong.

With 5:30 am on the clock, I am bursting with energy.
That is, as long as I manage to get myself to bed early enough. (which is the bigger challenge)
Whereas when waking up at 7:30 am, it's just mediocre. Nothing special. Ordinary day.

I am now a true "morning person". And have been so for almost two years now.
Never thought I could just.. "switch", that. (with some melatonin & no bright screens)

So these are some of the natural ways to achieve continuously what amphetamines can force only temporarily.
Except if you have ADD, in which case it may or may not still be worth to use this kind of stimulant.

Hope this helps someone.
As some of it would've helped me 8 years ago.

The whole idea of taking ANYTHING scares me. It would be like jumping off of a cliff -- believing I can fly. Being in rhythm with my body and Life works for me. I go to bed by 10 PM and I normally get up at 6 AM. I don't drink coffee or sodas. I don't drink alcohol or use drugs. I had life-threatening health problems when I was young, and I want to continue to live. People tell me I can have just one. That would be dumb on my part. As long as I'm a really good girl, my medical tests are "normal" and I feel well. It's still a daily struggle. When you're dancing on the tip of the needle, you become very careful to keep your balance and maintain your footing. So, why would anyone do anything, or take anything, that could lead to them having similar health-issue struggles?????

Well if they really do have ADD, then that is a pretty serious (medical) condition not unlike what you're saying.
Left untreated it can wreak havoc on many aspects of one's life.

There's a big difference between:
- someone who is addicted and snorts/shoots several grams of amphetamine each day
VS
- a person with severe ADD taking about 0.005-0.040g a day orally, often under supervision
who otherwise can't keep a job because they have extreme trouble paying attention, planning, etc.

The latter can actually have a decent life with treatment.
And sometimes meds like Ritalin and amphetamines are part of that.
Enabling them to put food on the table, sustain relationships, feel like a "normal" person, etc.

I agree. One of the "throw-away" kids that I raised was severely ADD and he took Ritalin. His birth mother was a run-away teenager who drank and drugged while she was carrying him. The Ritalin helped him a lot. But, you're right. If people take that stuff without having the physical condition, they are fooling themselves. Those meds can, and will kill you over time, if not properly supervised.
