Something I regret not doing is taking better care of my teeth. Sure I brush my teeth, floss, and use mouthwash everyday but I do it half heartedly and don’t really get in there. Today I did and god damn was it not pretty. Swollen gums and visible plaque shows me I can do more. What are your teeth regimented for people in the same boat?

Step 1. I use a Waterpik Cordless to clean any surface plaque and it gets all the plaque in between my teeth. Warning sometimes this causes my gum to bleed but I don't care.

Step 2. I use Crest DeepClean Mint Floss. Gets between the teeth.

Step 3. I use Arm and Hammer Extra Whitening Toothpaste with Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide.

Step 4. I use the floss again.

Step 5. I use Listerine Ultra DeepClean Mouthwash

Step 5. I use a tongue scraper.

Step 6. Crest 3D White Strips.

*The brushing needs to be at least 2 minutes. Also you need to use an Electric Toothbrush. Sonicare is the best to use from all the peer review studies on nih.gov

It's awesome that you are taking action and accountability on doing a better job of it!

There are a number of us dentists on the forum and I am sure plenty of people that are taking excellent care of their teeth (and yes your dentist can tell!) You are asking a great question and I am sure we can help with ideas and home care.

Just to start off with a few questions that you do not need to answer on here but that might help guide to you a great protocol:

Do you see your dentist /dental hygienist regularly?
- this might be every 6 months for some, 3 months for others
- when that plaque hardens (growing every 12 hours or so) it forms the hard calculus that your toothbrush isn't equipped to remove but your dental office is able to

Are you brushing for 2-4 minutes twice daily? (I also prefer Sonicare personally)

Flossing can be once a day but the technique could be improved by pulling the floss in a "C" shape to the tooth in front and back so that you are actually cleaning the sides of the teeth and stimulating the gum tissue.

If you have cavities, then fluoride in your mouthwash may be advised. - -Watch out for some versions of mouthwash that would be similar in function to a simple breath mint and not for gum tissue health or cavity protection.

Yes to the Waterpik! I would add it your regimen and not use as a replacement for anything. It may be a great aid in better plaque removal.

If your gums are sore from your better cleaning methods, a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water to gargle is awesome. However, it will not cure gingivitis, periodontitis, infection, etc. so if your gums are sore, teeth are loose, bleeding, pus or bad taste, painful, and/or swelling these are signs to see your dentist.

There isn't a permanent whitening solution as our teeth will change color with age, diet, drinks (think coffee, red wine, tea, etc.), habits. I highly suggest using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste for a week before whitening and then throughout as it can be uncomfortable.

Warning: Waterpik is like a pressure washer and has caused my gums to bleed occasionally. Once again I don't care. I love it when I see plaque in between and at the bottom of my teeth and then they disappear and then there's blank space.

Wisdom teeth (third molar) removal is a case by case scenario. Some are kept, some are removed, some people don't have them.

There are many factors including the size of the mouth, location/eruption, age of the patient, cavities present, health of the tissue and bone that can lead to recommendations. You could also consult with a local oral surgeon regarding your specific case to gain an additional opinion and help.

If you have been advised to have them extracted, then it's time to understand why and discuss with your surgeon or dentist. You can (and sounds like you should) schedule an appointment to solely consult on this!

You choose whether or not to follow through with advised treatment.

The reasons your dentist might advise extracting wisdom teeth may not be something that would cause you pain. For example, a lot of cavities are painless. The risks of not treating the painless decay include fracture, infection, and tooth loss.

My dental hygienist is a great lady, very straight-forward, doesn't "tooth shame" me for not flossing three times a day. Anyway, she recommended I watch a YouTube video titled, "009 Bad Bugs":

It's an odd video, but has lots of good info in it.

I learned ALOT about gum and mouth hygiene, and am using the techniques recommended in this video. Have my checkup again in two weeks and I want to see how things turn out.

Oh man, go see a dentist! they will get you excited about it again!

I hadn't seen one in 3 years, was expecting some cavities ye? , well the only thing on that front was an old cap wearing away.

My gums though? not so great, not terrible but not great, and I floss but casually , I was doing it maybe 3-5 times a week.

My man, they clean your gums now

Get hyped friend, it'll cost you 500 bucks or thereabout but they clean them normal, hit them with lasers (the wounded gum tissue forces healing and the new tissue reconnects the gum to the base of the tooth) , then they blast it with chlorhexidine.

I felt the futuristic gum health goodness, got myself one of those water picks the next day, now I do water pick one night, flossing the next back and forth like that.

Do yourself a favor and go get your gums blasted with laser beams, its awesome.

1. Go see a dentist.
2. Get a deep clean (scaling and root planing).
3. After that do the every 3 months peri maintenance
4. see doc every 3-4 months
5. If you need crowns, Porcelain's are great if done correctly. Of course if you can spend a little more and get lava or bruxzir material
6. Yes it cost money.
7. Not recommended: but most places have a interest free plan if you can do payments but cannot cash out the whole thing.

Buy a Phillips Sonicare electric toothbrush.

I was skeptical at first with these things but they do a pretty good job of cleaning.

It feels like you are getting a cleaning at a dentist's office.

I was skeptical at first with these things but they do a pretty good job of cleaning.

It feels like you are getting a cleaning at a dentist's office.

Proven to be more effective in cleaning also.

Proven to be more effective in cleaning also.
If your gums are sore, gargle semi-hot water (the warmest you can tolerate) with 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda. It will immediately get rid of the pain

Watch out for Fluoride which is poison for the body and can be found in toothpastes all over. Besides that get your mercury fillings out and in check, there are other forms of fillings, such as silver, ceramic, gold.

After all that is just my opinion or advice which I am living by.

I'm not a dentist, but I believe the important thing is to remain hydrated. Drinking fluids like water washes your mouth of bacterias that are causing bad smells and possibly hurting your dental health.

Please ask if any of this is unclear! Seeing me at the office is about the worst part of anyone's day so hopefully just reading about it is a little better :)

Dental pain is miserable enough, waiting or hesitating to see a dentist can limit your options and is putting yourself at risk.

If you find yourself googling dental pain, go get help from a dentist. If it hurts spontaneously, wakes you up at night, is swollen, hurts all day, only feels better if I do _____, is of unknown duration or cause.... go get help from a dentist.

With food and drink, keep in mind that what is best for your teeth may not be best for your individual diet. When weight, medications, medical concerns, and other considerations come into play then a compromise may need to occur.

Bottom line is sugar and acid. In the US, many of our store-bought products are both. The bacteria use sugar and an acidic environment to flourish. Water all day is the best thing to drink! The more often you have a sweet treat, carbohydrate, or take a sip of juice/soda/ etc. during the day the worse it is for your teeth. Limiting the frequency of sugar and acid is a key component.

Even if you are eating less than three meals a day you will want to brush twice a day. The bacterial plaque (sticky white stuff you can actually see and scrape off) will be forming again in the hours between cleaning your teeth. To protect from abrasion on your teeth always use a soft bristle and wait 30 minutes after eating or drinking an acidic beverage before brushing.

If you are trying to cure an infected tooth with oil pulling, it will not work.

In general*, gum tissue will not grow back. The appearance of your gums can change and be manipulated but it will not grow back naturally in an area of recession. You can have gum tissue grafted to be replaced. (*Though if you think of healing after a tooth is extracted, then clearly that tissue heals and grows back over the site)

According to the American Dental Association, gingivitis and periodontitis are the major causes of bleeding gums in adults. Due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque between and around the teeth, I've been affected by severe gingivitis. Usually, I found it difficult to remove plaque and it hardened into tartar at the base of the teeth (near the gums). When plaque extended below the gum line, it caused injury to the soft tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Now, I'm practicing proper oral hygiene to treat gingivitis. After you eat food that contains sugar, the bacteria in plaque produce acid which eventually attacks the tooth enamel. So, make it a practice using mouthwash after brushing and flossing. Also, don't forget to schedule regular dental checkups.
This is just a symptom of people just slacking off life and sleep walking through life. Time to get pristine teeth and stand out. No more BSing. Time to become literal uber man lol.
