My business partner (also friend) and I are skeptical about trying marijuana for the first time this upcoming weekend. We are considering trying it because we've been grinding for weeks now on our online business and we want to take a small break to enjoy our youth and experiment with something new. However, we wanted to ask FLF if it would affect us negatively in the long run first. So, are there any long-term effects that make it not worth it? Looking for unbiased opinions on this question so feel free to comment your opinion. Thank you all.

Hello fellow fastlaners, I and my business partner (also friend) was skeptical about trying marijuana as a way to calm us down because we work a lot on our business but we wanted to ask FLF first. Are there any long-term effects that make it not worth it? Does it really calm you down? Looking for unbiased opinions on this question so feel free to comment your opinion. Thank you all.

If I recall correctly from your intro you’re 15 years old and in Alabama? There are way too many negatives, especially at your age and Alabama’s position on the drug. I would explore exercise, meditation etc.

Don't smoke weed I'm speaking from experience. It's all fun and games in the beginning but if you want to make something of your life don't touch the crap.

Did it negatively affect you after usage? Also, did you smoke it a lot or just a few times?

I have a strict rule of no significantly state-altering substances until at LEAST 25 years old. For males, the brain doesn't fully develop until sometime after that age.

So call me overly cautious...

But I'm happy with staying mentally sharp > running the risk of getting lazy, psychosis, etc. over the fleeting moment of temptation you're facing.

Yeah, the JUUL has been a big epidemic in my area (and all around the U.S.) in schools and minors. My friends are addicted to them, but I have never really felt the urge to try it because it gives absolutely no benefits. They say they taste good like peaches and stuff, but if I wanted to taste peaches, I would go and eat some peaches, not inhale nicotine with a taste of peaches. The only reason I would consider smoking weed is to relieve stress and to make myself feel better.

It's been a real long time since I smoked. The reason why is because when I smoked regularly (this would be pushing 20 years ago) I got lazy, stupid, and a lot fatter.

That's not embellishing. I was forgetting basic things. Couldn't follow simple instructions. It's all great fun if you have no ambitions besides lying around on the couch and eating junk food. These days I guess it makes you into a hipster who spends time on reddit.

Is that what you're after?

If I could go and take back the first time I smoked, I would. This is coming from someone who's experimented with all types of drugs. It just did not provide me any long term value, and now I'm working on reversing the effects it's had on my memory and cognition. Led me to hang out with out weed smokers, and go to parties and shit that didn't do much of anything for me.
I'd stay away.

With that said, LSD (in a stable environment, with the right preparation) has provided me with insights that I'v been able to use to improve my life for the long term. MDMA as well. (Psychedelics should not be taken lightly, and you have to be very careful you study enough on how to have a "therapeutic experience" and find a good source)

Wow, that's not fun at all. I do have ambitions and I am not after getting fatter, dumber, and forgetting things. I have life goals I want to achieve and from what it sounds like, marijuana will not boost that. Thanks for your response, rogue.

Thank you VERY much for that response. I was actually talking with my friend about psychedelics and it sounds like it would help a lot with creativity. Could you tell me a little more about psychedelics in a private conversation? I'm gonna wait till I'm a bit older to try them though, obviously, but it would be nice to know about them from a person who has tried them before.

And honestly, the fact that your wise enough to be questioning using it shows to me you should definitely avoid it. Don’t follow the crowd of morons who smoke everyday for recreation.

I smoked it a few times when I was younger, but never really enjoyed it. Either it gave me a headache or put me to sleep.

I hung around a crowd of weed-baked losers who smoked the stuff daily and they lived meaningless, unproductive lives. I'm so glad I escaped that social circle.

Everyone is different and everyone responds to it differently, but I'm going to say don't waste your time and money on the off-chance that it will help you relax.

Form habits early on that you won't regret. Smoking weed is only for those who are seeking instant gratification and complacency, that equals a bad habit am I right? Even masturbation was proven to not be effective in getting things done.(don't quote me on that)…...watch someone quote me on that......

True grind, hard work, will always be more rewarding.

I got lazy, stupid, and a lot fatter.

This.

I stopped smoking socially because anytime I did, I just wanted to eat and sleep. I realized that eating without the marijuana was just as fun.

Marijuana is ideal for making you happy with living a mediocre life. Nothing wrong with that. But if you're ambitious, then it's something I'd stay away from.

And if you do smoke: You won't change right away, so don't worry about that. It's not like smoking once ruins your life altogether. However, be mindful that it does make you lazy, unambitious, and dumb. Nothing will be handed to you. You have to grind. Getting high and talking about your ambitions (something I've seen a lot of stoners do), will not get you closer to your goal. Working your a$$ off is the only thing that can work - marijuana doesn't help you do that, if anything it makes you more likely to sit on your a$$.

Lastly, yeah, there's successful people that smoke, but there's a lot more that don't. A good lesson for you right now in your teens: look at people in their 20's that you want to become. What were they doing at your age? Maybe some of them were smoking pot, but I bet most weren't. And those that were, are they people you want to become? I'll save you six years of experience and tell you that they're not. Most of them turn out to be unmotivated losers.

Good luck @harp1600.

We are considering trying it because we've been grinding for weeks now on our online business and we want to take a small break to enjoy our youth and experiment with something new.

Taking a small break like for how long? Being high on weed the first time will last you a few hours at the most. If you mean like spend a few days smoking weed to "enjoy your youth" I say hell to the no unless working on your business isn't something you take seriously.

Anyways here are some quick pointers for your questions:

  • You'll be fine if you smoke weed once. It effects everyone differently, I know a few people who felt nothing (maybe they didn't smoke it right though).
  • It's probably the least dangerous thing you can put in your body. No actually, cheeseburgers kill more people than marijuana does.
  • There's different strains, which have drastically different effects.
  • I don't know how some people can smoke it all day and still function. I've only ever been high as a kite, lazy, and hungry lol.
  • I've never used it habitually, but I'm pretty sure I would be lazy if I used it all the time judging by how it's made me feel in the past.
Unless you use it medicinally, I wouldn't recommend making a habit of using it (also it's illegal where you live, someone mentioned Alabama so there's that).

I use CBD oil, as I have Tourettes, and it helps alleviate the anxiety and occasional depression that comes with it. It doesn't make me high, just calms my nervous system down.

Ultimately though if your friend and you are working on your online biz, I think that should be your main focus instead of experimenting. "enjoying youth" is overrated. You'll wish you worked harder later.

I'm suprised by the majority of negative responses towards weed in this thread

Trying marijuana for the first time, is like taking a shot of alcohol the first time. Your perception and mood is altered temporarily...that's it.

You won't get hooked on it, so as far as just trying it, there is no good reason not to (unless of course you just dont want to).

You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. You're on this forum, pretty self aware to even ask this question, and working towards your goals. Smoking weed won't magically change your character and make you into a lazy person.

I don't get the arguments of being lazy. Yes, when your high you might be lazy (or not depending on what you smoke) and get hungry. But also when you're drunk...And also all the kids who are smoking weed and are lazy, would be just as lazy without the weed. I'm speaking from first hand experience as a teenager who was lazy before and after smoking weed :), and then also not lazy and smoking weed.

Take it from Big Mike himself, the millionaire who sells fertilizer to weed growers. Don't smoke when you need to be alert and focused to do something productive, and you can smoke when you don't.

I NEVER smoke when I have work to do. I can't stress how NON addicting it is and how it WON'T alter your life. I literally sit at my desk doing work while my girlfriend smokes 2 feet away from me and I'm not one bit tempted at all. Funny thing is if she was drinking a beer I'd be more tempted to take a sip.

Time to take a hit and go to sleep :) (No I'm not addicted to using it to go to sleep either).

I also want to add, I'm not trying to influence anyone to smoke marijuana or to make an argument for using it. I just want to say whether you try it or not, makes no difference to your life long term*

The only time I would be very cautious is if you have a family history of psychiatric conditions since there seems to be some kind of link there.

I never understand this argument. Being drunk and being high are both altered states and neither of them are particularly productive states. Just because one is legal and more socially acceptable does not make it better.

---

You're 15. You should really be avoiding drugs and focusing on other stuff. You're young and have lots of time. Focus on educating yourself, going to the gym, doing sports, or joining some school clubs. Drugs put you in an altered state. No real reason that you should feel the need to take them at your age.

Save the drugs for when you're 35 and stressed about life... but there are still more productive ways to blow off steam (rock climbing, shooting, SCUBA diving, swimming, gym, reading fiction, skydiving, MMA, etc.)

Thank you, very much. I honestly agree fully with that. My peers are all more like apes than humans and I can't really see them getting much done in their lifetime.

I appreciate the response.

You got your answer for weed, I'd like to talk about any addiction in general. IMO when you get addicted to ANYTHING, it's negative somehow.

I'm still fighting my gaming addiction (laugh if you want).

I see everyone at the office being unproductive until they got their cup of coffee, like a bunch of junkees looking for a hit.

One of my friends is in shape like no one else: daily 4-5hrs gym (and he doesn't want to compete). That's been affecting his family life big time as he neglects his children and wife to train more.

Weed can probably be tried once, in a controlled environment. I did it, coughed like crazy and had a sore throat. Tried it again at a later time and it confirmed to me that this thing definitely wasn't good for my body, let alone my mind.

Try to think about all those things: are they really a must ?

Edit: Just came out yesterday: New study finds that marijuana can reprogram sperm genes

Thank you for the input. I, myself, was addicted to gaming, in particular, Minecraft a long time ago (laugh if you want), and Fortnite in which I quit quite recently. I agree with an addiction being toxic to your health in some way because addictions are usually things like drugs, gaming, etc which involve time which is also not good for you to waste.

Your reply is very valuable, thank you.

I'm suprised by the majority of negative responses towards weed in this thread

It isn’t so much weed as it is any mind altering substance/activity at his age and stage of the game. I personally don’t smoke anything and have no ill will toward anybody that does.

For a 15 year old though it is an asymmetric activity. His best case scenario is nowhere near as good as his worst case scenario is bad. He needs to focus on activities that flip that around where his best case far exceeds his worse case. That’s what MJ’s books are really about, the asymmetric return of investing 5-10 years and getting 30-50 in return.

IMO when you get addicted to ANYTHING, it's negative somehow.

Absolutely 100% spot on.

Even masturbation was proven to not be effective in getting things done.

Just kidding.
