YouTube comments as a form of marketing/outreach?

Hi guys

I've been lurking for a while and need some advice.

I'm building a SAAS app, which will be released in May.
I'm starting to comment on YouTube videos in my niche. My hope is people will read my comments and visit my site.
If they are interested, may be even submit their email.

My strategy is to listen to the YouTube video and make a relevant comment. Afterwards post a link to my site.

Do you guys have any advice on the best way to comment (i don't want to be a spammer)?
I know some of you are copywriters.
Any tips & tricks will be appreciated.

I also post my website URL in YouTube comments sometimes. I cannot say that it worked yet. After doing it for 10 times I think I got a couple of clicks and nobody signed up on my site.

I do not watch videos just for the purpose of commenting on them. Most comments quickly get buried on the second page or farther.

Perhaps those 2-3 clicks came from my own video that I posted, I do not know. I run Google Analytics. Is there a way there to tell where exactly a click came from?

I think a better strategy is to pay for targeted ads. AdWords, Facebook, etc.

All Referrals leaves out search engines and direct traffic, and only shows website domains (including social networks) that have referred traffic to your website.

All Referrals shows you the website URLs visitors to your website have come from.

You can click on any of the domains—some let you see the specific pages that referred traffic. This is helpful if the referral source is a blog, for example. By clicking on the domain, you can see the specific posts that are sending visitors to your website.

Good point. So far, the videos I'm commenting do not have pages of comments. They've been out there for years. I might post on the videos that show up first on youtube and see what happens.

As for AdWords, Facebook ect, I'm trying to bootstrap as cheaply as I can. Ones I know my product provides enough value, I might look into these.

I would think that commenting on content works at attracting some traffic, however, is it effective?

I'm guessing it is, but it depends on the effort.

I've gotten a few testimonials from people who said they found my book mentioned in comment sections.

Your strategy sounds rather “manual” don’t you think?

Nothing wrong with it though if that’s what you wonna do.

Here’s something that you could try that you could combine with what you are already doing.

Take note of all the videos you are commenting on. Also find more.

Make a video of you explaining & demonstrating your app.

Add some cards to the video that will link back to your site.

Run this video as in-stream ads on all the videos you noted. You can find some channels that are in your niche & run your video on those too.

Invest a few dollars & see how that works.

Love it! I'm planning on making videos on how to use the app. Didn't think about cards in the video linking back to site or running ads on videos I noted.

Are you looking to build a brand on youtube?

YT frowns upon putting links in comments for just links sake. Also, depending on the size of the youtube channel, they'll just remove the comment if they see a link in it as it takes users away from their channel.

I have heard of the commenting (without links) working though. Your Screename would be the prime marketing engine as that would be a way to showcase your product without putting the link.

You could also just reach out to the smaller channels to set up some time of paid advertising.
