"How driverless vehicles can enable on demand accommodation for one night or 1000, and at rates 10x cheaper than your rent bill"

Here is a link to a very thought provoking article I read on Medium and I think members of the forum will enjoy as well. It really gives a lot of insight and foreshadowing of our world in the 5-20 years.

Enjoy!

Not a fan of socialized housing. Maybe in Europe but not here.

It kind of reads like utopian sci-fi. I like the imagination, and the possibilities discussed are thought provoking, but I have trouble swallowing the pill.

It is pretty crazy to think that a large number of current car owners will cease to own a car and just rent an autonomous car on demand.

I feel like the people who write about driverless vehicles all live in dense urban populations where having a car is a burden, like NYC, LA or San Francisco...

I genuinely enjoy driving. I never let people drive me, it’s a control thing. I definitely see the potential in driverless cars, but I don’t see the adoption being anywhere close to what people predict.

The convenience of this would be amazing. Can you imagine going to the beach and having all of your things nearby? Out on the town and can change your clothes at will? Order in or stop in at a dining facility without going back to the hotel room first. This is like my travel trailer on automatic mode!

Yea I agree, dense populated areas this is great for. I love driving as well and think there will always be human piloted cars unless the government makes it illegal.

This is what I am talking about! Like an autonomous RV! You can travel the US on an awesome road trip and not have to worry about driving, where to lodge and have all the comforts. I want this now!

From an entrepreneurial standpoint, what could I create the would be prime for this market. I am thinking more like accessories not full blown autonomous car or tech.

This. Driving is one of the single most enjoyable aspect to life IMO.
Especially if you have a nice sportcar or muscle car.

Second, in 10 years, how many people will still be working on-site in a building? As more people work remote, roads will become less packed, and the desire for self-driving may actually go down.

I have zero interest in driving just to drive. Give me comfort, relaxation, and a path forward through progress. I will take my "off-roaders" out when seeking a thrill... :)

No autonomous vehicle for me. I'll take a motorcycle...thanks!
You never know when a disability will strike. I can't wait for autonomous cars as it will give my mom and grandma much more freedom then they have today.

I am also a motorcycle rider and I do not trust human drivers. I will trust a computer any day over the average driver.

Don't forget, that computer might have ethics built into it and it may choose to kill you instead of somebody else. Something to think about.

Had more human drivers cut me off then I would like cause they couldn't see me. A computer has 360 degree vision with no blind spots and can react at the nanosecond level, can't get drunk or distracted. The likely hood of it ever being in that situation are slim.

I too agree being a motorcycle rider .Look at all the texting and driving today. My vehicle sits up higher and while i"m driving not a day goes by that I see texting all the time . Also great for the elderly . Myself I want to be in control and enjoy driving , but I don"t live in the big city.

I am with you Scot. People made bold predictions for driverless car adoptions by 2020 etc. however, they forget about rural areas.

There is a lot of places without internet or high speed internet and cell phone reception. Up north here people pay extra for a landline and use the yellow pages. I get it in Chicago etc. but in rural America it's a long way out.

My feeling exactly.

(obviously, don't take this picture seriously)

I am thinking abut the fear of being inadequate because of this - it's kind of depressing...
I should start to view this in a practical manner - it's a whole new niche for entrepreneurial ideas :)

and cults...and much art...political movement....god, is it big only in my head? when Elon Musk talks about it he makes it sound like it's obvious as much as the earth is round!!XD

Great read. I think it will have its place where people live in a densely packed City where having a car is a burden. I will always need my truck. I'll own the last piece of dirt you can drive on if I have to.

Same here, what's the use of buying a sports car if you can't drive it. I guess some are "born to be driven" sitting in the back seat :playful:. I agree, nothing beats the freedom of controlling your ride... which is why I like motorbikes more!

Great thread, of course there's a difference b/w driving for work and driving for fun. As more people move closer to urban centers, this makes sense. And that's typically what happens and how cities are built.

But we also have to account for growing old, when you're young - you can do whatever you want. But as you grow older... things become difficult. We have two cars at my dad's place. He only uses them occaisionaly because of Uber. He finds that its better than having a driver and taking your own car... 1) parking 2) traffic, 3) other drivers bumping into you while they look at their mobile phones. So yeah, this makes more sense... and with remote working increasing, time is money.

I can't wait. Driving used to be a pleasure for me, but now it's just a tedious task that robs my time.

Was just talking with my dad about exercises. He said: look so beautiful park nearby, everyone can jog etc. Than he said, unless they all use those electric scooters, scattered around the city.

What a timing!
