Three financial SCRIPTS that I listened to with the rest of the herd - Listening and following financial porn to plan my early retirement. I use to believe that time and compound interest was the only way that I can be wealthy. I can't believe I wasted so much time listening to these morons on CNBC marketing their financial products or listening to their predictions on the market.
As MJ said in Unscripted , the best defense against the SCRIPT is knowledge.

Exactly what I though too, before reading TMF . My perception was that one should get a well-paying job, save a lot of money for investing in Kiyosaki real estate or stock market @4% . Maybe retire with 60 if you are lucky, otherwise retire much later :(
Unfortunately almost everyone I have talked to in real life seems to believe in this concept.
Mjs book was an eye opener which I am very thankful for.

DEBT = MONEY
Since 1971, the US dollars are no longer backed by gold and every currency in the world is backed by the US dollars - I'll let you figure that out. Furthermore, our economy has evolved into a debt-based economy meaning that the economy will falter if people stop borrowing! The Script is over 100 years old.

MIND BLOWN.

Note: ColdFusionTV post quality content so you're not watching a conspiracy theory.

i learned about the money scam when i was 10 at school.

we made a game and if you found the answer to a problem, you were given "money" ( monopoly bills ) to buy candies

i figured out that , as the official " banker " of the game , i could print monopoly money as i wished without answering any questions

so i was able to buy all the candies i wanted without doing any work at all or answering any questions !

i was the king without anyone knowing about it

this is the same scam in society with our life

Awesome video.
I'm reminded of the countless times I've been approached in my car or in a parking lot by panhandlers. They ALWAYS say Jesus or God or God bless or some version of that. Real world affirmation right there.

This past weekend, I was painfully reminded of the SCRIPT.

Talk about an underhanded and stealthy way of trying to force the SCRIPT on someone. It took me a day or two to release the anger from that thought.

Same happened to me this weekend, except it was the ol' mother-in-law.

She will never speak a word to me about my businesses. Good, bad, anything. It's like they don't exist. Dunno why, I've been running one for almost 3 years and am getting a new one off the ground.

However, when I leave the house to go play with the kid, she will tell my wife all the reasons she thinks my next business is a bad idea. And my wife has zero involvement in anything that I do, and she just says "uhh... why don't you just talk to him about it, I don't really know anything."

What I want to say is that her family-run niche magazine is a dying business model and a bad idea... but I guess advice isn't allowed to go two ways! I think she thinks she is similar to me because she has a "small business".

I THRIVE on this kind of negativity though. All my life, when people have told me "you can't do X" it just burns me inside to prove them wrong. And it's immensely satisfying when I do.

13 Jobs with the Fastest Growing Salaries and Biggest Pay Raises

Another example of the media telling us what to think. If you want to make more money, pick one of these fast growing jobs. This is a classic example of the articles that I use to read. I use to think that comfort and security start with a good job at a good company. I would take these salary projections and then use a spreadsheet to determine how much I need to save to retire. My overall plan revolved around "hope and time" for financial freedom. When I started working in the mid-90%, I assumed that the S&P500 would return at least 15% a year since it was returning 20% year over year in the 90's.

With the way the market has been this year, that narrative is only gonna get stronger. Expect the media trumpets to blow louder.

Hidden Camera Social Experiment Proves Most People are Sheep! This video makes you think it is fake at first but I bet it's not. I see very similar scripted action everyday at work. During a meeting when someone says something not remotely funny and most of the room laughs after one or two others do. When the boss thinks something is a good idea but you don't and speak up but nobody else does UNTIL after the meeting in private telling you "I am glad you said something" haha Scripted zombies!!!

Scripted movie recommendation: Betting on Zero. It's a Netflix documentary about a Hedge Fund manager with huge short on Herbalife, trying to expose them as a pyramid scheme (for profit and justice, according to him).

Really interesting to see the script at play on all sides.

When I was in elementary school all the boys wanted to be pro athletes:

"I want to be a football player and make millions."
"I want to be a baseball player and make millions."

Teacher: "It's extremely rare and not likely, but if you work really hard and don't get injured you might make it."

(2 kids became MLB players)

My career aspirations were a little different:

Me: "I want to own an NFL team. If Tom Brady gets paid 20 million year, then imagine how much the person paying him makes."
Teacher: "SquatchMan, that really isn't possible unless you're born rich."

Ignore Mark Cuban, Arthur Blank, Jerry Jones (he had some spectacular failures), Al Davis, Wayne Huzienga, Steve Bisciotti, etc.

EDIT: I don't even want to own a sports franchise anymore. However, I like that the mindset of boss vs employee was present even as a little kid.

This is another expert that preaches the Slowlane for building wealth but doesn't follow her own advice - Suze Orman: Stop wasting money on things that make your life easier

She said: "Stop leasing cars, stop eating out, stop doing the things that's wasting your money and makes your life easier, because in the long run it's going to make it harder."

Suze preaches about getting rid of debt but was pushing her audience to spend $40,000 for a new Acura TL as part of her endorsement deal in 2012. This came right after she said "Since the most significant drop in a car's value occurs in the first two or three years, buying one that's just a few years old means you avoid paying for those early years of big depreciation."

The answer is right there in the article:
"having never done much long-term financial planning"
"in 2008, as the U.S. economy spasmed, she lost her home" (aka bad debt)
"She owes $50,000 on her credit cards."

Like you @luniac, I don't understand why people do this to themselves.
Yup, whilst reading the article, all I could think is that she spent her entire life preparing for the moment she's living in, and, it's not a matter of judgement thinking that I or we are any better, but in recognising that the choices we make today will land us exactly where we will be in the future.

Scripted Jobs most susceptible to automation

The Parts of America Most Susceptible to Automation

Highlights:
Most think the hardest area/jobs hit with automation will be the Rust Belt and manufacturing - Not so!
Much of the manufacturing is already automated
Areas of high concentration of food preparation, office or administrative support and/or sales will be most effected by automation
Las Vegas, Riverside-San Bernardino, El Paso, Orlando and Louisville will be hardest hit
More than 55% of jobs will be lost to automation in those industries areas

Note: follow the unscripted path and avoid becoming obsolete to a machine!
Another good example of automation technology changing Scripted Jobs:
A new business called the Tipsy Robot just opened on the Las Vegas strip. It replaces bartenders with Robots. They can make up to 18 cocktails, each taking about 60 to 90 seconds while the customer watches a timer that tells them how long before their drink arrives. When not serving drinks they can slice fruit or dance to a soundtrack entertaining customers. customers order drinks on tablets and pay with tabletop devices. No tips required. No human resource issues. Because of the new technology and being on the las vegas strip drinks are pricey ($14). Don't look for it this year in your local pub but maybe in 5-10yrs bartender positions will be limited.

Old news, but extremely relevant.

Chicago mayor to require an 'after-graduation' plan in order to receive high school diploma.

"[...]the plan will require the Class of 2020 to [have] in order to graduate: a college acceptance letter; a military acceptance/enlistment letter; acceptance at a job program (for example, coding bootcamp); acceptance into a trades pre-apprenticeship/apprenticeship; acceptance into a "gap-year" program; or current job/job offer letter.

Chicago Mayor's Plan To Update H.S. Graduation Has A Fatal Flaw

So basically, get a J.O.B., or we won't let you have your diploma (entrepreneurship be damned!)

Ive just been listening to the frugality scam whilst driving to the train station so it made me chuckle when ny parking ticket had this top "get rich quick" tip on the back of it....1500360399695297473721.jpg

Thats right, book your £9 train ticket in advance and soon you'll be a millionaire. (My ticket isnt even any cheaper online so not sure how quickly my £0 savings will add up)

Ugh. Where's my ice pick?
Oh the INSANE irony this man preaches. "My secretary is in a higher tax bracket than I am." Warren Buffet. But Warren every one in your employees is a W2 worker. No one ever asks him why he is not a W2 employee and does not draw a salary. They just let him spew about how "The rich" don't pay enough taxes because it fits the media's progressive (communist agenda).
Well Warren why don't you step right on up and draw a paycheck like your secretary does, instead of being paid with investment gains, become a W2 employee and get put right up in the highest tax bracket available and pay "YOUR FAIR SHARE"? After all you are the BOSS Warren. Queue the crickets...... Don't expect anyone in the media to have a CLUE because they are ALL W2 employees.

SEC charges brokers with scamming retirement-age investors out of $40M

Ah yes, the best game in town is selling the game, not playing it...

According to the complaint, the brokers sent incomplete or obscured forms to the targeted employees in order to hide the fact that the variable annuities were privately issued, with no connection to their Thrift Savings Plans.

The SEC believes that these brokers made a collective $1.7 million in commission off of the sales of the variable annuities. They allegedly sold 200 products, with a collective face value of about $40 million.

If found guilty, the defendants could be forced to give up their profits, plus interest, penalties and permanent injunctions, the SEC said.

I'm trying to be a more positive sumbitch these days, so I'll interject. Yeah, these shenanigans are still the biggest game in town, but:

@SteveO will donate his time to help me think through real estate.

@Vigilante, @JustAskBenWhy @ChickenHawk and @JScott will donate time to help people with authorship.

@amp0193 @JAJT @Scot @Yoda will donate the time to let us learn from their experiences launching products.

@SinisterLex @Fox and @jpanarra will log the travails of the freelancer.

There's another script to be had. Thanks, folks.

  • I keep coming back to this forum to keep myself UNSCRIPTED .
  • There is a whole wide world out there...
  • Does anyone else feel crazy for having these Fastlane dreams?
  • Normal people my age are out and enjoying themselves
  • Of course they are also very vulnerable and broke too
  • FOMO is real, but so are corporate takeovers and layoffs
/end rant

PS - a heavy hitter on the forum was nice to take a call from me once.
I kept his voicemail in my phone just to remind me that there are people that have hit the Fastlane.

Not to get all religious here, but I guess improving your life takes a ton of faith.

Working towards something that does not exist, can not be seen, and is not guaranteed.
