Well said. Gluten is neurotoxic even for non-celiacs. People just don't realize it because they walk around, drugged, unknowable. We live in a physical word, and physics / chemistry impacts us more than we realize.

The clarity, poise, grounded focus you can get by tweaking your diet are MAJOR tools in whatever quest you may undertake, fastlane or otherwise.

I would say, to everyone who cares, drop gluten and casein for 30 days, and wonder how you could live in this state until now. You'll feel like the sober guy in drunken city.

Speed+ Kung Fu Steve!

Maybe you and KFS should do a practical real world application thread of swapping out gluten in the diet. I think most people can't get a handle on it because it's never put in practical terms that people understand.

I think this is also why the no carb diet (what was it called) caught on, because it was simple, eliminate bread which is a high source of carbs. People then can remember that.... "give me a burger/sub with no bread" " dont eat the bread at a restaurant" etc etc. My metaphor here is terrible but the principle is the same.

Using drugs to feel better or improve concentration etc, is no different than using a credit card to feel rich.

You rob yourself of responsibility, which contains within it the power to change.

If you want to be healthy, or wealthy, there are no shortcuts. Your body has the ability to heal, but it needs you to co-operate, just like we all have the ability to get rich, but we must align our actions to those goals.

If you win the lottery, you have money, but you are not rich. Drugs are like winning the lottery, they just make the journey to real wealth/health much longer since you'll have to undue the damage they've done and you'll likely become dependent on the feel-good they provide.

Do you include things like coffee in this, or just those deemed harmful too?

Also, I assume you mean if you use something everyday to get the productivity boost, and no once in a while, right?

Guys,

We are getting off track here. We all know there are to many young kids and young adults on this stuff but thats not the point of the thread from my understanding.

There is a huge working advantage "fastlane" to using this medication in a controlled environment for work purposes "only" by responsible adults. The brain works in overdrive and the new thought process followed by increased plan execution dominates over the normal day to day grind that we all can get accustomed too.

Things become achievable and negative thoughts are placed on the back burner. I can assure you that if you haven't tried this then you cannot begin to understand anything that im talking about and that is an understatement to say the least.

I have preset rules in place that I follow. I take breaks each week. I wont use it on the weekends or for recreational activities. I only use it for work in the early mornings. Take it for what its worth.

In my belief any time you are trying to solve a problem, for example low productivity, you have a choice between short term and long term solutions.

If you solve it with a drug (caffeine, adderall or whatever) then you have only set yourself up a potentially dangerous cycle, because next time you face that problem you will be more likely to reach for the quick fix. And eventually the quick fix will stop working and you'll need more of it or more serious drugs.

When you solve short term, you only solve the feeling of the problem, not the real problem.

If you need coffee to get going in the morning, you probably need more sleep, better diet or ? If you deal with those issues, then you won't ever need the drug, and you'll be free to enjoy coffee, without the risk of using it as a crutch.

Thanks for the reply! I feel very much the same way as of lately. I've had to kick out coffee, and red bull as of lately simply because each day turned into a cycle of 'I can start once I have *x*'. And that habit with red bull quickly turns into a huge money sink once it's multiple times a day :x

On that note though, I do feel I benefit from doing things, unless if it turns into a 2-on 1-off type deal. Then it turns into a mental benefit rather than a real benefit.

So how do I get a hold of some? I wanna try it out because if theres one thing I struggle with, its FOCUS

I'm all over the place and have multiple tabs open on my browsers because I'll start off trying to do one thing, see something, get distracted and start doing something else completely. I was supposed to do something just now actually, but now I'm answering this forum post..

I've been hesitating to chime in here because I don't care to argue.
I get kids, teens, and adults off of their medication through mental
and physical training. Agree or disagree, I make it happen. I only
care about results.

I would take a look at your diet. Gluten can/is one of the major
causes of the lack of focus. While you may not have Celiacs per-se,
It might be one of the major causes.

I doubt you are looking for a solution that isn't a drug or "quick fix"
but anyone taking this "medication" should realize what it is. If you
think it's just medication - you better do some real research.

And before you go spouting off what is in the news or popular
opinion - do your own research. Results are the only thing that matters.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

I can only say this:

I turned 50 this year.

And since I've been in my teens, I've seen a LOT (ie, dozens) of things that friends/acquaintances took or did to improve their performance. Everything from cocaine to coffee (4 shot espressos) to running to meditation, to . . .

. . . you get the idea.

Many humans are interested in bettering their performance. That's only natural-- esp for someone who is driven and success-oriented.

My only caveat to this entire thread would be:

Stop looking at outside forces to gain speed/momentum.

Instead, focus on YOU-- become a driver, instead of a passenger needing a vehicle to accelerate.

My results only: The more you work on yourself, the less you'll need outside things (drugs, other people, coffee, etc) to enhance your performance.

Make an appointment with a psychiatrist at your hospital. They will make you take a questionaire and interview you. If they feel that you legitimately have ADHD, they will start you off on some medication. Every time it runs out you have to see your psychiatrist again to get another prescription; this is so that they can keep up with you to make sure that you're not abusing the medication.

Some people get ADHD medications just to lose weight as it's an appetite suppressant. So, if your body weight doesn't change radically and you look healthy, they'll keep writing you prescriptions every time your pills run out. From the time you first see your psychiatrist to when you get a hold of your pills it'll probably be about a month depending on how frequent you schedule the appointments.

They make you jump through some hoops but it's definitely worth it once you finally get the pills as they will definitely help you concentrate, and unlike popular stereotypes, they won't turn you into a zombie; your personality and creativity will still remain.

ADDERALL IS NOT FOR ADHD!! It its for add which is completely separate and an actual medical condition. Most people try to talk them selves into being add when I'm reality they are simply to lazy to try to focus. This why these drugs are over prescribed. It certainly has its uses and risks.

The results are nothing like the movie limitless. The drug is a class 2 with cocaine being a class 1 drug. I am providing information so anyone considering can't make an irresponsible uninformed decision.

This Adderall approach sounds like an "easy quick fix." It sure sounds great to me -- the biggest thing that prevents me from executing my Fastlane strategies, or even doing as well as I could/should in my everyday consulting gig, is my lack of focus. I realized about 10 yrs ago that I show many signs of ADD behavior and so does my mom, but in our case it tends to exhibit as "lack of productivity" instead of "great creativity" or anything like that.

But I am leery of trying to "fix" it with a drug. I have indulged in recreational drugs from time to time, from alcohol to less conventional sources. But "fixing" my thought processes? That seems riskier than an evening's entertainment.

I like Georgian's comments about gluten and casein causing brain fog and other problems. I've thought for many years that I should try going off grain and dairy for a month and see if I feel any different. But damn, grain and dairy accounts for about 2/3 of my diet!! (Which probably indicates some kind of allergy/addiction...)

I honestly don't know how I'd survive without any grains or dairy. But I'm getting closer to giving it a try. Within a month or so, my (soon-to-be-ex) wife is moving out, and she'll be taking our kids half-time. I'll have 2 weeks at a time of not feeding anyone else, which would make it a lot easier to try a radical diet change. I'm going to give it a shot.

I guess I'll have to find some gluten-free beer... :)

Trying to keep this civil as possible..

By taking drugs such as adderall or other crap you are seeking the event of a rush or high. You feel motivated but then you crash.
You can buy something expensive and get a rush of feeling rich but by the following week it's gone.

Motivating yourself from within is a process.
It takes hard work and patience. It is possible to attain focus from within yourself. The only thing is, many people do not want to put in the hard work and dedication. They would rather pop a pill and get instant gratification.

Same here! I started opening 2 windows to fit all the tabs.

And this similar thing happens both offline and online. Can't do one thing, can't stand still. Well at least quitting 9-5 was an easy one for me.

I just had to quote this as it has proven to be very true for me. But this ADD thing is real and very strong.

ADD is a normal part of living in the twenty-first century.

A hundred years ago, most people didn't have electricity. So, gas lights, NO phones, NO TV, NO video games/internet/etc.

Instead of a 20 second sound bite, or a 200 word web post, they'd do things like read books.

One book.

For hours.

When folks say "life was simpler then", they mean there were less things to compete for your attention.

Less distractions = More focus.

You can achieve the same amount of increased focus by hiking out in the woods, w/no smart phone, and only the food/water you need to get through the next day. Or stay in a cabin (car nearby), and bring in a bunch of food/drinks (not alcohol or drugs).

I'm serious. Disconnect completely from your current life for 3 or 4 days, and you will be amazed at how much more "focused" you can be.

The trick then is to introduce things *back* into your life, and still maintain focus.

(hint: if you do this correctly, you will wind up eliminating a LOT of time wasters/things that compete for/distract your attention).

Taking a drug can make you *feel* more focused, just as caffeine can.

But learning how to eliminate the distractions in your life-- THAT is a long-term fix, not a short-term pill.

And it addresses the problem at the source: Too many distractions. Taking something that allows you to "focus" simply allows you to ignore or not see/consider the distractions-- it does not get rid of them.

There's some comments in here about how you can't have ADD and ADHD at the same time, or that they're somehow complete opposites.

The fact is, ADD and ADHD are simply terminology differences, and the medical community has mostly dropped the use of "ADD" and uses "ADHD" with different classifications. ADD is 'attention deficit disorder' with not being able to focus, and ADHD is 'attention deficit hyperactivity disorder' with your mind being all over the place. If you take a second to think about these logically, it's fairly easy to see how they go hand in hand. If your mind is all over the place with ADHD, doesn't that automatically make it difficult to have an attentions span, making you ADD? Adderall is prescribed for both ADD and ADHD.

But ADD and ADHD are simply 'labels' given to everyday people with everyday problems. We all forget stuff. We all have issues with focusing or concentrating. These don't require medication. Obviously if a kid grows up playing video games they will have difficulties paying attention in the classroom. Some of you here may have other conditions such as anxiety/depression that predispose you to having ADD or ADHD symptoms, and I encourage everyone to see a doctor and take a blood test (not a questionnaire or survey, but an actual medical exam) to determine if they have chemical imbalances or vitamin/mineral deficiencies. If you have many other physical symptoms, then you may have a real medical issue that requires therapy or medication.

Trying to be civil here, but please stop trying to diagnose yourself. Because the moment you do, you'll tend to lean towards a self-fulfilling prophecy effect, which means you'll lead yourself to believe it, based on your own doubts or notions, which will lead you to situations that feed into that same perspective:
Self-fulfilling prophecy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saying you have lots of tabs open in a browser and think you have problems focusing does not mean you require medication. Well how about using a browser without tab functionality, what happens then? What happened when you had dial up, or did you grow up on the era of cable/DSL? Or, better yet, what happens when you make a conscious effort to have only one browser tab open? What happens when you tell yourself, 'okay, I'm going to spend this 1 hour online for this topic and then go do something else'? What happens if you pretend someone is watching you? Do you act the same when using the internet in a public library as you would in the privacy of your own home?

Multi-tasking and focus takes training and practice like anything else. You're not born with the ability to focus. Man (and woman) are born as animals, to be hunters and gatherers. We exit the womb and enter into a 'civilization' with expectations based on our society, to be able to 'focus' in school, to be able to 'multi-task' without zoning out, to be able to 'sit still' … but these are not inherent human traits. Do you think certain third world countries where people are born into physical labor and sweat shops even have a clue what ADD or ADHD is? If you're never taught to speak/read/write, do you just know it from birth? Much of what you know or know how to do depends on the environment you're brought up in. Yes, some people have innate abilities or tendencies that may pre-dispose them to learning or being better at a skill, but you still have to learn and practice that skill.

My uncle was a pro-athlete because he was playing tennis/soccer all the time. That was his process. He wasn't born a pro-soccer player from the womb. His grades sucked at school, and he couldn't focus on school to save his life, but that's because he was always out playing soccer day-in day-out. I sucked at sports because I didn't play them. But I was good at programming and computers, taking apart stuff and putting it back together, because that's what I started doing at an early age.

What is it you can't focus on? You can focus enough to read this entire thread and post on this forum, right? You can focus enough to read the MFL book, right? You may find it easier though to focus in front of the TV for 3hrs. You can focus enough to carry on a social life or relationships. These may seem natural because you've done them a lot, meaning you've practiced them without realizing it. Other things will take a conscious effort.

Some people require more conscious effort at certain things than others, I certainly know I am one of those people. You don't just get good at something all of a sudden. That's why you can write 'multi-tasking' 'good communicator' and those other soft skills on your resume or cover letter, because they're skills that come from practice and experience, and from being molded by environmental factors, not stuff you're necessarily born with.

We all have deficiencies, but thinking you have to take something for your deficiency is the easy way out, and in the long run doesn't address the core problem. Just like athletes who take steroids. Some of them even claim to use them responsibly, and it's possible to do so probably, but in the end, they lose that edge when they stop, and you eventually have to stop or face the health consequences.

By the way, here's a great resource on ADD/ADHD:
Adult ADD / ADHD: Signs, Symptoms, Effects, and Treatment

And for more information, please read about the experiences of people who have actually taken Adderall:
ADDERALL 10: Side effects, ratings, and patient comments
(as you can also see here, the results are split between people who took it for ADD or for ADHD)

That’s a fallacy to say you’re uncle was bad at school because he was good at soccer, since there’s no connection between the two. Your uncle was bad at school because he either didn’t have the intellectual capacity for it, had the drive for it, or had a focus problem relating to a mental disorder. If we assume the second one then that’s a good reason why. We live in a reactionary world in which our actions causes a result and if your uncle put forth effort into school with adequate intelligence then I believe he could succeed and do sports.

On regards to self-fulfilling prophecy I highly doubt the users of this forum are seriously considering that they have a mental condition which causes them to lose focus. No, they are pondering on enhancing themselves to go to the “NEXT LEVEL” of concentration and single-mindedness through this manipulation of brain chemicals, and which doing so will make their lives easier by giving that extra edge. Sure they do not need it, and I’m not recommending using this without doctor’s supervision since this is a grave medication to take. I repeat, I’m not recommending it without doctor’s supervision or use without a qualifying reason to use it.

Yeah, I don't claim to have ADHD at all, but like lights says I just asked because I heard the previous posts saying that it helped them to do what needed to be done and gave them clear focus for a duration of time.

I'm interested in that, but not to the point that I'll go and see a doctor and convince him that I have ADHD. My friend has adderall though, I might ask for a pill to try out maybe..

I happened to be surfing through a different (car) forum today, and saw someone posting on how they had lack of focus.

When I was in my teens/twenties, people talked about having "low blood sugar"-- another self-diagnosed thing that was "in" or accepted to have as a quasi-medical issue. In reality, it was more due to poor eating habits and lots of fast (or just plain bad) food.

These days it's "in" or accepted to talk about ADD or ADHD as a quasi-medical condition (ie, people say they have it, but in reality, they have not been medically diagnosed w/the disease--- they just think they have it).

What people like this see is others who are more focused/productive, and they reason that something must be physically or medically "wrong" with them that prevents them from achieving the same things.

When in reality, it has less to do w/a medical condition, and more to do with *who* they are.

It's also an easy excuse for lack of focus. You can learn how to focus without drugs. Yeah, it might be a bit harder at first. But after you learn how, you won't need to rely on taking a pill to get things done.

No, not really kidding. I really enjoy a beer or two on occasion. Obviously it affects focus and clarity, but when I'm enjoying a beer or a glass of wine I'm not in a focus/clarity working space. I'm just enjoying it. Not too worried about addiction either, as I've been an occasional social drinker for over 30 years now...

I think the problem is that where the latest posts used to be, it now shows hot topics or something like that.... I thought a bunch of old topics were alive again, until I looked in and saw the last post date...

isn't true that alot of CEO´s on Silicon Valley are using adderall and other "smart drugs" ???

I was thinking about this as a great trend to capitalize :)
