I joined Fox Web School and saw other progress threads, which motivated me to create my own. I have been on the course for a month now, watched it, created a website of my own for my services, a few demo sites to demonstrate my work, and am ready to take sales action.

I started prospecting last Friday and have been calling businesses yesterday and today. I got one prospect who was really interested and asked for further information, so I emailed him and suggested a sales call for Friday. He has yet to be answered.

I'm an introvert, so I'm really happy that I have gotten over the first terror of calling people. LOL. I can see only uphill from here.

I'll update this thread at least once a week or more.

That's awesome! I started that program a month ago, too! What type of program do you use to build websites? Divi + WordPress, Elementor + WordPress, etc?

Cool mate! Good luck, and let's grind!

I use WP + Elementor and find it quite nice. How about you?

I haven't used any of them yet, but I just downloaded Divi. I'll see how it works, and if I like it, I'll keep it. But I've heard Elementor is way easier to use, so I might download that one to see how it works, too.

Update time from last week and what I'm planning to do this week.

Last Week

I cold-called and emailed dozens of people daily with little to no success. I got a few interested people through cold calling, but nothing has been locked in yet, and cold emailing is horrible. I suspect that my emails are going to spam. More on email problem-solving this week.

At the end of the week, I realized that cold emailing & calling won't do me good without at least a few solid portfolio projects, so I posted an "ad," if you will, on a services group on Facebook. Got 3 interesting portfolio clients!! Yay

Also, I started researching SEO content topics to write as I want traffic with more potential eyes on my services. Wrote two great posts as well. SEO is one thing I can do with confidence.

This Week Plans
I noticed some procrastination as I have many things I'd like to do (web design, SEO, dropshipping, you name it), and my focus was all over the place. So I wrote business guidelines or a plan to keep my focus on one thing at a time, which is web design, and nothing else now. SEO content is part of it, but no additional SEO sites to distract my focus.

I have a scheduled call with my first portfolio client today, which is a moving company back in Finland. Also, I have another meeting in person on Thursday with a Finnish scout hobby business here in Fuengirola. I'll contact the third portfolio client, who is a serial entrepreneur with a cleaning business, restaurant, and some other things after figuring out steps with the other two, to keep my focus.

I also bought Google Workspace for my business to optimize my email, but there is some technical stuff i need to figure out before doing it. In research mode about this.

SEO content is on the production line with 4 articles/week as a goal before dialing back on that and increasing cold call & emailing volume when I have the technicalities figured out.

I'm excited, and i noticed the power of writing tasks down, which is incredible!

Till next week!

Update time again!

Last week I closed two portfolio clients, and they are on the work desk. I'm finishing up one client's website which is a Finnish moving & transportation company. I'll start the other this week, which is a restaurant website.

I also did some cold calling last week but have dialed down to finish these portfolio projects as fast as possible. I also optimized my email and started the warming-up process just today. The technical stuff about the email took A LOT of my time and brain power last week... So technical...

I also got contacted by a therapist who wants a new website. It was about my "free websites announcement," but I said the free spots had been filled, and she wanted to talk to me nonetheless. So, this may bring in some initial money success. I have a sales call with her tomorrow.

This week's plan is to finish my portfolio projects, write some SEO content, and maybe do some outreach if I complete them quickly.

Back at it!

Wow great progress and well done on securing those portfolio projects!
I joined FWS recently too, just wondering what hosting you're offering?
Also that FB post seems like a great idea to start out, was there any particular way you structured it?
Thanks!

A few weeks have passed since my last update. I have been working hard on my website, which I launched today, and it's really great and professional. So check on that one.

Also, I closed my first deal today in a 1-to-1 meeting! Only a $500 website deal, but it was near here, I know I can get her great results, and it'll give me more experience.

My portfolio-free projects have been delayed as the "clients" aren't so good... They don't seem to care enough, and it's pretty annoying to work with them. Especially one of them. But I'll try to finish the websites as soon as possible.

For the next few weeks, I'll start consistent cold emailing & calling, write more SEO content, and learn about a potential freebie to offer in ads (gotta learn that too) to make quality leads come to me, not the other way around.

To the grind!

It's been a few weeks since my update. I got a bit carried away with designing my website as I wanted to have all the required pages, social media accounts, booking page, great copy, etc, etc.. However, it's so great now that I hardly believe it myself, which means so it will for potential clients.

I also took another great course on social media marketing (FB & IG) as I wanted to have something to offer that would create recurring revenue. When selling web design, that's a project, but month-to-month marketing can last for years, so combining both is great.

I'll finish my heavily underpriced three-language website this weekend for my client, and afterward, the only focus is on selling starting next week. No SEO content, no perfecting my website, no nothing. Those doesen't create fast results this is all about!

Have a great weekend all.

Just a quick note to others reading this. OP obviously found out that people do not value FREE. So while someone may take the time to contact about a free posting, they have no skin in the game and so they likely aren't very responsive, etc. They probably also discount the value you are providing (ie if you're good why would you do it for free).

For getting initial clients I would recommend offering a FREE consultation only (ie phone call 30 min to understand their problem and how they could solve it - with or without you). Once in discussions you can be upfront that you are getting initial clients and are new to being on your own and so you'll provide a heavily discounted rate. This doesn't have to mean you have no experience but maybe you worked a job before, etc. This is also why an initial job can benefit as it provides some experience and level of trust for when you freelance. You get some authority from the fact it isn't your first rodeo, it's just your first rodeo you've started yourself.

If you literally have no experience then I don't think you should even go after clients until you've build some sample portfolio sites yourself to prove you can build something that at least looks valuable and you'll get a sense of how much work it actually is so you don't overestimate what you can deliver or underestimate the time frame.
