What is your thoughts on making an extension to an existing app/software?

So I think I found an idea that has potential but the big problem that I see with it is that it's an app that communicates with an existing software that exposes their API. There are a lot of apps like that that seems solid made by a decent team but my problem with it is that if the software itself adds the same capability then you lose your business overnight.

I believe MJ talks about it in MFL or Unscripted but that came to mind so I don't know if it's something I should stay away of totally or if it could still be something that is worth considering.

I wonder if any of you have thoughts/experience with that? Maybe you've have your own SaaS like this that depends on another platorm.
