Hey!

I hope y'all are good.

It's a trendy subject, and if you don't know about it here, here you go: Designer Babies: Gene-Editing and the Controversial Use of CRISPR

What do you think about it? Should it be strictly regulated? Forbidden? Or encouraged?

Would you personnaly use it?

Have a nice day.
No - designer baby gone wrong sounds like a supervillain origin story.

Serious answer: don’t know - can see the benefits, but given that I don’t trust people to genetically modify the corn I eat, they can keep their hands off my babies, white lab coats and all.

I truly understand this. It's all about trust.

When it comes to getting rid of genetic diseases and such, I'm all for it. People are going to have kids. If they can do something to ensure their kids don't have disabilities, more power to them.

People who all want blond haired blue eyed model kids who look exactly like their favorite celebrity? Shallow and short sighted, and if enough people manage to do it we'll have a genetic singularity on our hands. Or spontaneous new tribes, each individual a slight variation on Justin Bieber (or... whoever).

The obvious moral question is, did these people cause harm to the child? Well, if they hadn't done it, they wouldn't have the same child, so it's hard to say isn't it? I guess it depends on outcomes for the human that child turns into, and that could be all kinds of subjective. Maybe they're excited to be a Justin Bieber who can leap 10 feet in the air flat footed. Or maybe they're depressed because Justin doesn't look as good in his 80s as he did when they were cooked up.

Somewhere there's a military research facility messing with this stuff to make top grade soldiers. Now that's something to think about.

Also, no I would not use it on a human (other than for real medical reasons), least of all my own children. There is a reason our species is still alive on this planet, and it's not because we understand all the ins and outs of good genetics. Diversity, reinforced by the combinatorial process, is still one of the most powerful forces on the planet. When we go around it we get blights that wipe out homogenous cultures all at once. The history of agriculture tells that story many times over.

One the one hand, it is bound to have unforseen consequences on the genetically modified human.

On the other hand, we can never improve upon the system if we don't start implementing it.

Are genetically modified humans okay?
Are organ transplants okay?
Is plastic surgery okay?
Is makeup okay?

Generally I see it as, you cannot stop the march of technological progress. As long as it is not used to subjugate and control and keep people down, it is most likely okay.

Is this really happening now? they have been predicting genetically modified babies since the human genome was mapped...... almost 20 years ago now.

they probably found out it is kind of difficult to make a code with hundreds of thousands of years of refinements and tweaks qualitatively better with no effort with just cutting and pasting pieces here and there.

Everything in the universe has an equal and opposite reaction. I'm pretty sure no one wants to see the dark side of this.

How about we humans stop trying to play god.

I'm all for it for another reason.
After maxing out genes and their kids still being failure
they realize that rising a kid is something that parents should
do. And not excuse themselves with "bad" genes.

Interesting. It could indeed delete excuses.

The real question is,
in the future will an objectively unattractive, or with some inherited disease non designer baby resent his/her parents for giving birth to them.

Everyone hopes their child will be healthy and grow up into a attractive adult,
if they can guarantee the genetic aspect of that, even i feel the temptation to use this technology if i ever have kids.
I feel conflicted about how right it is, but i am tempted.

Of course there's already been a great movie about this topic:

Also if someone is imperfect and faces increased challenges to overcome, well... that can lead to greatness.

It's true that everyone can be tempted to use this technology.

I chose regulated.

But if they offer a free live webinar + free ebook, I might change my mind.

True, and good looks would become commodified. I would be curious of the repercussions in the sexual marketplace.
