Here is my one and only website business: Web Design Brisbane | Cheap Web Design | Brisbane Web Designing

I was told by MJ leverage is within hosting, I see this clearly now. I am lacking a few things that I can spot out e.g. 'Customer Support'. All my clients are friends or someone I know. I have installed WHMCS (First time), and still trying to work it in, so far so good (I think).

Quick question, is anyone using WHMCS? If so, can you share your experience on how I can use this to my advantage?

Is there anything I can do to add value? MJ...I read the part in your book "Do it better than others" and then read "Not all businesses are fastlane".

My last question, in web design and hosting, is there a slight chance of being a fastlane? I feel like I'm following your footstep MJ on how started when you pointed out making money =without trading your time...but you acted boldly if you needed to drop a business if it wasn't going right.

I would kindly appreciate any advice, feedback and definitely critiques.

Why are you opening a web hosting and design service and only later thinking what can make this service fastlane, and what extra value you can provide?

The process should be the other way around.

First have a clear Idea of what additional value you can offer to the market, and how it can be done in a fastlane way and then open the business that will realize this Idea.

Why did you open a hosting website in the first place? Because MJ told you hosting has leverage?

- As a customer, What additional value will I get from switching my hosting from HostGator to your hosting?

- What benefits will I recieve from picking your company as my web developer and not the other millions of developers who are out there?

- What makes your business fastlane and not slowlane?

I don't understand? Isn't that what they call tune up and process until making some adjustments and the right choices.

?? Never thought of trying to convince a customer to switch....is that good business?
- What benefits will I recieve from picking your company as my web developer and not the other millions of developers who are out there?
I will keep in this mind. Thanks. I'm only targeting my own geo audience at the moment.
- What makes your business fastlane and not slowlane?
That's what I need to find out?? Any experts here? I appreciate the help.

I don't understand? Isn't that what they call tune up and process until making some adjustments and the right choices.

Tuning up means listening to your enviroment and understanding what people NEED/WANT.

Example: After hanging out with some pregnant friends, you notice that a lot of pregnant women complain about waking up some day to find that their pants no longer fit them. You think of a solution - a fashionable waist band you put on the old pants and tada! they hold without buttoning or zipping them up, and no one knows their pants are unbuttoned.

Now thanks to your idea, women will not have to buy new clothes for pregnancy. You answered their need, you created value for them.

?? Never thought of trying to convince a customer to switch....is that good business?

I was speaking metaphorically: why should someone chose your company over your competition? (in this instance, HostGator - a big, popular web hosting company)

And yes - If you want to get into a saturated market and make money, you are likely to need people to start using your service instead of the old one they were using.

That's what I need to find out?? Any experts here? I appreciate the help.

If you read the book, and read posts on this forum you should know by now what is the difference between fastlane and slowlane.

If you are opening another web hosting and development company without any plan on how you will be better than your competition, and how you will do it in a fastlane manner - then it is definitly slowlane.

MJ has just released a video about this yesterday:

Think about fastlane ideas and then bounce them to get feedback or brainstorm! (no one will do the thinking for you)

- What do you think is currently fastlane in your business?
- What is slowlane about it?
- What makes sure your business is not just another job you have created yourself?

Take the book, and check what fastlane criterias your business answers.
Will you give value to millions of people? Will your give value to few, very rich people? What is your competitive advantage over your competitors?

I see now, thanks for the video. I didn't know MJ posted a video. I have the book and did read it but perceiving could take some time for me to understand lol.

I did take a hard look at what I was doing but sometimes my vision can be cluttered unless someone sees the problem from outside. I did say something about MJ started with the books and built websites for a short time but invested into his fastlane business. I am in the process of making heavy decisions and planning.

Much appreciated!!

Dude, your website looks good! Did you design / develop it yourself or have someone else do that for you?

Feedback:

One of the things I found odd was that in the Quick Links section, when I clicked on "Web Hosting" your design portfolio came up instead of details about your web hosting plans. And when I clicked on "Domain Registration" your website design page came up. Maybe you're in the process of working on that, but I thought I'd mention it in case you didn't realize it.

Also, as a customer, after you impressed me with the look of your website (which equals credibility to me), one of the first things I thought was "Where's a link to their portfolio" and I had a bit of trouble finding it, although now I realize there's a link at the top to it. It might be more helpful for your customers if you add that link in your Quick Links section, maybe in place of the Domain Registration link.

My suggestion on building cliental for this business:

Start out by picking a single "mom and pop" type industry that you're really not all that familiar with and go through and view 300+ websites in that industry. No I'm not kidding.

By the time you've visited 300 websites of their competitors in that industry, you'll see what some companies are doing right and what some are doing wrong on their websites.

You can then solicit your website design services to those companies that have crappy sites and help them out by designing better looking, more customer-friendly sites. Maybe you even outsource this / hire employees for this, rather than doing it yourself; maybe you charge the customer $2,000 for the site, outsource it for $500 and pocket the difference.

Once you've finished their site, you then offer to host their website on your more-secure, better managed servers (as opposed to cheap $5 a month shared hosting) to them for $19 a month, or whatever you charge, so you get some residual income too. Have to sell them on the security benefits of using you as their host as opposed to the cheaper alternatives. And, of course, be honest about it too, don't tell them your hosting is more secure than company X if it's not. But I would assume you'd be using a dedicated server with all the security and management features that are important to your customers if you're offering hosting.

Then, move on to the next "mom & pop" industry.

Hope this helps!

WOW! Thanks Kwemer, that was very helpful. Yes, I did the design/development and just recently changed from a CMS back to normal PHP pages. I realized I didn't need a CMS(Opensource) for my own site since I was only trying it out back then. Not wise to do this on my own, that's where most of my time goes :(. This is one of the changes I am going to do this year. Thanks for spotting out those minor errors, I didn't know about it. I guess I must of copied the content in the wrong page lol. Your advice on the quick links makes sense, I will do some adjustments ;).

I like how you think, your advice has helped me a lot. I was only offering hosting for clients since I've never done it before, so I thought I'll try it out. Now I can work on those minor changes.

My previous comment, and MJ's video gave me some heavy thinking too (I almost threw in the towel lol)

Thanks again Kwemer :)

Web hosting/web design are probably the most saturated/competitive niches online.

If you can't bring something major to the table then it's not worth walking this path.

Web designers are everywhere and many of them are in developing nations working for pennies on the dollar.

I would really encourage you to do something else. I believe that anything is possible, but it's foolish to get stuck running uphill when there are easier paths.

I would either A. scrap the idea B. only consider this if you've managed to come up with some insane value-added proposition.

I can tell you from running a business that sales calls for web design/hosting/SEO are at the top of list with multiple calls DAILY. With this kind of thing, people have heard it all. Many big operations like phonebooks and trade organizations are offering hosting packages with free design plus the benefit of being found easier.

Do you love cold-calling businesses? Do you have the ability to hear "NO!" multiples times per hour without sweating it? Can you afford to pay $5+ per click on PPC?

This is the kind of business you don't say, "should I do this?" you say, 'HOT DAMN! I'm gonna revolutionize this industry!" because your idea is so good.

If I sound harsh it's only because there is probably not a single more competitive niche online outside of porn perhaps.

Thanks Neon, taken into account. I see your point about sales and especially the benefits for clients being found, etc. More to think about which is good.

This forum is the best and it rocks!!

Alright so basically I'm just reiterating what others have said.

But, first off I wanted to say good job on taking action, it's better than just sitting back doing nothing.

Unfortunately I believe this market is to saturated for it to really be profitable. There are thousands of companies who offer the same service at various price ranges, I think it would be difficult to over take the entire market and make it fast lane. But the keyword there is difficult, while still not impossible, it is very improbable. But hey, even if you swing a couple deals, you can use the money on another project that better suits a fast lane needs and want.

Keep it goin man, action is going to be a key part of your fast lane journey.

Kwerner posted something great, his plan could help you overcome the over-saturation of this market. This forum is filled with information, you just have to know what your looking for.

GOOD LUCK my friend.

The upshot is because you already have website skills you are in a great position to do just about anything online without having to worry about outsourcing the web design part of it.

Now what we HAVE established here is that the world is full of web hosts and web designers...what can you offer THEM?

Don't dig for gold, sell shovels!

All the naysayers........just let him get up and going and learn! Who knows, he may actually do it better than others and might be in better position as a local choice (where things are going in my opinion). The little bit of income he does pull in will fuel other enterprises started from what he learned. Props to buckmajor for doing.
