RIP to all the third-party client businesses which added a lot of value to users for YEARS but ultimately violated "Control" in CENTS.

TLDR: Twitter has banned third-party clients from using its API, following the unannounced block of popular apps such as Tweetbot and Twitterific. The new rules prohibit the use of Twitter's API or content to create a substitute service to Twitter's own apps.

Commandment of Control still undefeated.

I ran in the same circles as the guys that made the iOS clients Tweetbot and Twitteriffic back in the day. Good dudes, but this is not the first time Twitter has jerked them around arbitrarily. Basing your business on the App Store and nothing else is already on the ragged edge of the Commandment of Control, but add in lashing your entire business to a schizophrenic company like Twitter? I’m a little surprised they lasted this long.

Yikes. Imagine working for X years on some project with X number of people on payroll and BOOM. It is all over instantaneously.

My favorite bit (emphasis mine):
We are sorry to say that the app’s sudden and undignified demise is due to an unannounced and undocumented policy change by an increasingly capricious Twitter – a Twitter that we no longer recognize as trustworthy nor want to work with any longer.
Reeks of “you can’t fire me, I quit!”

Lack of Control scares the absolute hell out of me.

Twitter officially bans third-party clients after cutting off prominent devs

Another lesson from the recent Twitter acquisition.
Remember the CENTS model.
Control was given up by these major applications only to get hammered by the restricted APIs.
Although the apps had a major need/ want, Twitter took that power away in an instant.
Rumors of TweetHunter's value dropping (they were in a buyout deal).

Another event, another lesson.
