Leo Grand lost his job at MetLife in 2011, as well as his home, being forced on his own in New York City.[2][3] In August 2013, while homeless, he was offered the choice between $100 or coding lessons, by Patrick McConlogue. Grand opted for the lessons.[4]

Grand was able to learn coding, leading to the launch of "Trees for Cars," his own mobile app.[3] The application has the aim of being environmentally beneficial.[5] The app went on sale for $0.99.[6]

In May 2014, a follow-up by Business INSIDERS revealed that Grand, although earning a little under $10,000 from the app, was still homeless.[7]
What skills did he lacked that curbed him to bounce-back ?

Everyone who thinks an app is going to make them millions needs to see this.

10k is a great side gig, or killing debt however deposit, rent and the like would kill that pretty quick of he could get somewhere. Can you get somewhere in NYC with 10k no reference and looking homeless? The guy might think he can never pull it off again.

I'm unable to speak to the states, however here without an address it's hard to open a bank account, so no cheque or card for you.

There's lots of alternatives like skrill/prepaid debit cards/googleplay/paypal cards which are commonly used to pay people unable to get bank accounts by employers, however none of them can be used to pay rent or extract cash without kyc/aml which requires an address, catch 22. Plus kind of hard to accept them as a business though not impossible.

The other guy can take the money although he then has to justify to the bank and kyc/aml the taking out of 10k in cash to give to someone else.

Also is 10k enough to rent a one bed room in new york? What's a typical budget like? How many apps at the same price would he have to make to break even in a dingy place in NYC?
