As you know, the world is set-up to glorify the EVENT: Fast results, instant gratification, and on-demand satisfaction.
You want to binge a particular TV Show? You got it, just fire up the NetFlix.
You want to listen to a particular band? Why wait for the radio, just queue it up on Spotify.
You want X, Y, or Z? No problem, just fire up your smartphone and get it.
This "on demand" environment teaches kids to demand the EVENT in all walks of life.
Laid to waste, is the PROCESS -- the only thing capable of producing winners.
So when your kid falls into EVENT type thinking, here is how you can change it:
Attach a PROCESS to the EVENT.
EVENT FOCUS (Parent gives in, or negotiates)
Teen: I want to buy a kayak with the money I earned from my job. The kayak is $290.
Parent: But you had to work weeks for that and you have other bills! And you never even went kayaking!
Teen: Kayaking looks super fun. I want a kayak and I earned the right to have it.
Parent: OK.
PROCESS FOCUS (Parent sees the event, attaches the process)
Teen: I want to buy a kayak with the money I earned from my job. The kayak is $290.
Parent: But you had to work weeks for that and you have other bills! And you never even went kayaking!
Teen: Kayaking looks super fun. I want a kayak and I earned the right to have it.
Parent: OK, tell you what: You can rent kayaks down at the lake. If you go kayaking once every week for the next six weeks, I will buy the kayak for you. Deal?
Teen: Uh, OK that sounds good.
This is a true story and what happened was as expected. Suddenly the teen's interest in buying a kayak on impulse DISAPPEARED. Even with the offer, attaching the simple process to the event made the event disappear, never to be spoken of again.
Had the process been endured, you would then know the purchase would be justified and not a wasted impulse buy or novelty.
That's the magic of attaching a PROCESS to the EVENT.
