What do you guys think of SMS marketing? Studies show that there is a 98% open rate along with a 20% click rate when it comes to SMS marketing.

Does it work in a way that you can simply mass text thousands of people with good copy and a link? Of course, you have to get these numbers. Perhaps finding/creating a mobile phone list of a certain demographic and using a software to mass-text all the numbers at once?

Would love to hear your opinions on this and any experience in this unique form of contacting new prospects/existing customers.

I used to have a software for BB that would mass text

Pretty effective if you've already built a relationship with your client, not so effective if you bought the list of numbers

Sounds very effective for existing clients. With that said, how about collecting these phone numbers from users' for them to be texted during launch date of an app for example?

I use it, it helps..alot, but my demographic is cell phone dependent so that might be why.

Really interesting Darius. If the demographic is Gen Y, then SMS must be a great method too.

Do you use it for existing clients for upsells and also new prospects for marketing campaigns?

Edit: Whoops, meant to post this in the Public "Marketing" section. Sorry about that. Just reposted it there.

FIrst you want to make sure you have the right to send messages to the user.... You should be using a service like you use an autoresponder. Normally you will get a service that use a shared shortcode if you are looking to buy your own shortcode than that is a ball of a different color.

In order to ensure that your list is repsonsive you would have to build it the way that you build a email list other than that you list will be garbage additionally if you buy numbers it is highly illegal.

Please check out the laws first ...

Telecommunications is a heavily regulated industry in the United States, and with the advent of SMS text messaging, many of these laws and regulations have been determined to apply to texts and phone calls. Here are some of the laws and regulations you need to be aware of when you’re creating an SMS campaign.

1. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) regulates any means “to communicate with or try to get into communication with a person by telephone.”

TCPA has some strict-opt in requirements—namely, that consent must:

  • be in writing
  • come from the owner of the device
  • identify the advertiser and all companies that will have access to the customer’s phone number
  • make clear the type of text messages the consumer is signing up for (consenting to event updates is not the same as consenting to ads)
  • state that standard messaging fees may apply
  • include how the subscriber can opt out at any time
Once consent is given, it can’t be transferred between affiliates or by sale or other contract. People may bring suit for up to $1,500 per message (yikes).
