I've met with quite a few web agency owners, and other business owners since starting webdesign. One thing I noticed was that 2 businesses can be in business for the same amount of time but be in completely different places (one may have 3 employees the other may have 20 employees). Just wanted to gather some thoughts around what mindset differences have resulted in this?

Because it's better to have special forces than hire an army like every other dork does.

What do 99% of people that have a little fortune to start a company do? Do they check where the money in is coming from? do they see how much money? No, they buy laptops, they buy an office (pre corona) they buy their LLC, they trademark their name, then they start larping as a recruiter for some time to recruit a room full of people whilst posting about how great they are to LinkedIn.

You could cut 50% of the work forces in most places and they'd still run just as effectively when incentivized.

However - you can't just hire from upwork because these people aren't your special forces, they are mercenary that don't care enough about you or your success.

So to answer your question - People are lazy. Notoriously lazy.

So most people will answer this question as the reasons are based on luck, available clients etc.

But usually it comes down to who actually put in the work and who understands how to sell better.
