I'm writing a review of Hulu Plus for my website... and it's going to take a long time to get the TONE to come across the way I want. In the mean while, I REALLY need an outlet to rant about this horrible company.
While there are SOME THINGS people get upset about... I'm pretty understanding because I "get" their business model.
They're trying to carve out a niche of their own in between live TV and DVDs. They need to keep comcast happy, and not hurt DVD sales. They need to compete with other on-demand streaming services while remaining profitable, and they're restricted by their red tape every step along the way.
Despite me understanding their situation, it just doesn't matter because their service is just COMPLETE CRAP.
What is Hulu Plus?
Hulu lets you watch TV Shows that are between 1-6 weeks old on your PC. Hulu Plus is a paid membership that's two main selling points are:
FAIL #1
You still have ads. You're paying monthly, and yes you still have ads... TONS of ads, all over the place. Sometimes, not even in the correct places. I've seen a show be interrupted MID SENTENCE by an ad.
FAIL #2
The Wii, Xbox, and Tablet versions of Hulu crash COSNTANTLY. It takes me 2 hours to watch a 47 minute show. You're PAYING to be able to watch these shows through the apps. That's why HULU PLUS exists. It doesn't work.
FAIL #3
Some shows are "web only" shows. Remember, I pay for Hulu Plus SPECIFICALLY to watch on my TV and NOT my PC. I just added 3 shows to my queue, only to find out that they were "Web only". WHAT AM I PAYING FOR?
FAIL #4
Buffering.... Every.... 10... Seconds.... It's not my internet connection. Netflix, Amazon Prime, iTunes, even ZUNE work fine. It's ONLY HULU that has... these... buffering... problems...
Fail #5
Their PC Ads DONT EVEN LOAD. An interactive "crest" ad loads up for my commercial break... except the ad doesn't even freakin load. So i have to sit there and WAIT for 2 minutes for the 'ad time' to be over. Is the advertiser paying for me to be annoyed staring at a Crest logo for 2 mins? This happens nearly EVERY SINGLE TIME.
FAIL #6
The user interface is HORRIBLE. I added some shows to my "favorites" for easy access later. Turns out, No "favorites" section on the app to access these again.
It's hidden inside my queue. Very unintuitive. Sometimes I'll select a show to get more info on it only for it to start playing the most recent episode. Tons of other frustrating user experience issues.
All in all, I feel like Hulu Plus is full of fail. They don't deliver on the things you're paying for, it's riddled with technical glitches and bad design, and there's really no point to it.
