Story time
Another day, another news article about some company hit by a cyber attack. Not only is this an issue for the company itself, but it's especially an issue for the customers of that company, their data is now a commodity, used by other groups to target those who though they were not interesting enough to be a target in the first place.
Smaller companies are at risk too, in my country, a medium sized website hosting company was hit by ransomware last year. They were given the option to pay the demands to the attackers or have their data encrypted. They either couldn't or wouldn't pay these demands. The consequence? They shut down. What happened to their clients who worked hard on their WordPress blogs, eCommerce shops and who knows what else? Their data was encrypted as well. GONE.
I could go on, but hopefully this helps highlight a subset of the issues. Something I want to do something about.
My background
I have a background in software development with a focus on cyber security. I'd like to use those skills to help as many people as I can, while of course creating a sustainable and profitable business out of it.
Having studied a bit of business as well and having read some books in that field, I want to combine what I know in order to be able to help people at scale.
This thread
This thread will be a progress thread, documenting the ups and down of my ventures. I want it to be helpful for other people in case they find themselves in a similar situation and might learn from the mistakes I'm bound to make, or perhaps copy something that worked well. I'll also use this for myself, noting down and reflecting and holding myself accountable. I can look back in the rear view mirror and evaluate myself and improve that way.
Current project
Currently I am working on a project where I scrape various data sources and combine that into one big overview of webshops in Denmark. The goal there was to help consumers get an easy overview of the legitimacy of a specific webshop. Things I'd pull would be their ratings from various sources, information about delivery options, payment options, reviews by other consumers and basic company information.
The main income from that venture is from affiliate based sales. They visit our site, get information about the webshop, click our links and buy something and we get a cut of that. It has proved quite reasonably profitable, but due to the nature of the affiliate industry, things go up and down quite a lot. While it has been a fun project, it's nearing its end, it works fine as is and automatically updates. While I could add more features, quicker load times etc. I honestly just want to build something that has a bigger impact on the world and also something where the CENTS principles are more in my favor. If anyone would like me to, I could do a deep dive into how exactly that project struggles in those regards. This project will hopefully generate a steady cash flow useful for my other ventures. I could use that money to outsource or purchase help for my next ventures if needed or just invest it into the good old stock market.
Future project(s)
In the future I want to start building various SAAS solutions related to cyber security. Easier said than done, I know. I currently have a couple of ideas I will investigate further once my current project has been finished, as to not have too many things going on at the same time. Some ideas that come to mind is value skewing typical cyber security products such as backup solutions and making them easier, more secure, and develop more features if the market is interested. I'll go into details with that once the current project is done. I haven't fully decided that path yet.
