Pretty impressive stuff -- 4% is a LOT in things measured by seconds and minutes.

@SteveO you marathon and run, any experience here with these shoes?

This class of Nike shoe confers at least 4% energy savings per foot fall, according to tests by Nike scientists and independent research labs. In 2019, runners wearing Vaporflys claimed 31 out of the 36 male and female podium spots in the six biggest marathons around the world.

I have not used Nike for about 15 years. They don't fit my feet well. Gonna have to try them now.

I recall a few years ago first hearing the term 'techno-doping'

It was in reference to the shark skin type suit Adidas created for Ian Thorpe. Those were then banned.

Adidas then tweaked and came up with the LZR used by Phelps. Those were subsequently banned.

Prior to that, when I was younger, Chris Boardman won Olympic pursuit Golds on a bike developed by Lotus (small English sports car manufacturer) Those were subsequently banned.

Apparently World Athletics are thinking of banning these shoes but it wont get through in time for this years Olympics - as Nike would appeal and the process is longer than the time left to the event - so they may be banned from subsequent ones.

I wonder if any amateur Triathletes use all three!

As you mention, 4% advantage is a huge leap at the very pinnacle of sport. Their sales will rocket after The Olympics to Joe Bloggs who is not confounded by rules but want the best kit.

One thing I remember reading is that a lot of the improvements in world record times in the Olympics and other sports, are actually improvements in equipment. Go back far enough and you have people wearing gym shorts and leather/canvas shoes. Now we have zero-drag aerodynamic clothing, road-gripping polymers, precision stretching fabrics, and super light weight materials. Atheletes compete with each other, and engineers and product developers compete to make athletes faster.

I tried a pair on and loved them -- actually bought a pair. I don't run, but I do a ton of jump rope.

Nice, here's an in-depth article from the New York Times on it from a couple of years back:

Very true, for just about any sport, new technology helps athletes break the boundaries of what's possible. In hockey for instance, new sticks are lighter and stronger than older wooden sticks, which theoretically should help players shoot harder and faster. It does help you appreciate the accomplishments of some of the older players though (he shot how fast with a wooden stick?!).

MJ do you do any specific exercises with a jump rope? I've picked up skipping as a very efficient and travel friendly cardio exercise. My goal one day is to do a hundred double unders.

Not really, jumping rope is a way I can keep my hip-hop dance moves fresh as I grow older, lol. I usually just do standard jumping with occasional bounces from one leg to the other.
