I decided to stick around. After a few days of reading many of the threads I have to say I really do love the site and community. There seem to be plenty of people here who are willing to give advice and that's great.
As for me well I'll start with my background.....
I grew up within a poor family with a stepfather who was both verbally and physically abusive. We lived in a very old run down barn that had half of it converted into a home. Now, it wasn't as bad as it sounds. However, one of the worst times of the year that I hated the most was winter because our water pipes would freeze and there would go our running water. The only way to flush the toilet was to bring in snow, pack it into the water tank behind the toilet, and wait for it to melt. Obviously, showers couldn't be taken as well. Lastly, we relied on our fireplace to keep us warm. There were a total of eight people in the house: my mother, step-father, and six kids.
I won't go more into detail but as you can see I know what it is like to have to live that way for a long time. Eventually, my siblings and I, after many hardships and trying to survive, we made it out. All of us turned out to be very nice, respectable, young adults. We turned out to be nothing like our parents, which is huge and shocking to some.
So, where does that leave my siblings and I today?
Well, I am the second oldest and the rest of my siblings are doing pretty well for themselves but I stand out from them in terms of views on life. My mother has that mentality work hard, save, and live below your means. She believes in a secure job which in her mind means a secure financial future. Well, you would think that with the amount of job loses in this economy that would change someone’s mind but it didn't. I think the sad part is that my other siblings have taken it to heart that same logic.
I mentioned that I see things in a different light. It all started after the first time I saw that my mom had to put snow in the tank of the toilet bowl just for us to flush it. The worst part was that it had to be refilled every time someone used the toilet. I thought to myself, "I will NEVER have to go through this! I will one day have a million dollars!" That's what started it.
Fast forward.....(perhaps one day I'll fill in the rest)
Now here I am 26 years old and just barely getting by, literally. We have a 2/2 apartment that my girlfriend had to lease in her name because I have terrible credit and same with my roommate. We moved here because rent was only $975 plus utilities, it was a smart financial move because the other place was going into foreclosure and was more expensive. The landlord didn't pay the bills and was going on trips (true story).
