I think a trap that many, myself included, fall into is that we focus too much on what we are good at. As a result, every idea ends up revolving around that 'thing' and we overlook or discard ideas that don't fit with our view of what we are good at/who we are.

Great point!

Since I last posted I have made $972.. bringing my total to 2144 on day 29. Tomorrow will make the 1 month mark.

So I've passed the 1 & 2 month bench marks, which of course was going to be a lot easier than what's to come. By the end of month 3, I'll need to be at 4k, which wont' be a problem either. But then it will get interesting when I have to hit 8k by the end of month 4 and so on.

$2144/$4,000 (month 3 benchmark)

I read through all the comments in here. It's nice to see you're ambitious. A lot of experienced people have given honest opinions based on their experiences, some hit harder than others, but they are true.

Your focus is to make money at the moment. Your focus should be how can I make X amount of people happy. When you do that, your reward is monetary gain.

I'm a broke a$$ 20 something year old working multiple jobs living on my own. Don't take my word for it, take the ones giving the brutal truth.

I agree 100% that you have to make people happy in order to make money. The two inevitably go hand-in-hand. If you don't provide value, you don't make money. If you do provide value, you do make money. I think it's a pretty simple concept that gets somewhat overblown, for good reason, when people come to the forum looking to get rich yesterday.

How much are you going to reinvest in your business? All of it, or is part of it destined to support your living?

After the 4k you need to make the money to work for you.

Another thought: if you are getting a good track record with clients and you can get lots of work, you could start outsourcing it.
Like, you find 2/3 good cheap freelancers, you give them the work your clients give you, and you act as a creative director/editor, fixing what's wrong before turning it to the client. You earn the difference between what you pay and what you get paid by clients. Basically, arbitrage.

That could be a good way to make money while investing more time in building your own products.

I like your thread a lot, anyway. You're sticking with it. I'm a fan.

Thanks for the support :)

I can invest a good portion of what I'm making into other things, but not all of it. I need 1,200ish for living expenses.

Outsourcing my work worries me because then I'm putting my reputation in the hands of other peoples' ability to meet deadlines. Probably won't do that. I've got a couple big name clients now, and I'm seeing the potential that certain types of writing can have — copywriting, namely. Through writing for one of them I've found something I really enjoy, so I'm gonna let that fester in my head for a bit before I say what my grand plans are with it.

Whats your progress in building a scalable system/business?

Right now my progress is getting bigger clients for my writing so I have more money to invest. Invest into what? To be honest, I'm not sure. I'm figuring everything out as I go along. I do really like a certain category of writing I've been doing, which is copywriting for big physical locations such as casinos. Not only are they really cool, but I feel ethical writing about them. (I have an ethical dilemma writing copy for fitness products. You don't sell sh*t if you tell people how long it really takes to achieve a great body)

So right now my goal is to become a great copywriter for motivating people to visit physical locations because I enjoy it, can do it from anywhere, and it pays well.

Thanks for the question.. made me think through a few things.

Hiring good people takes time, but once you do it's worth it. This kind of arbitrage can help you scale writing jobs, but not sure if it's the best route for you.

Ah, I thought that each month began on the 1st... wouldn't that be a lot simpler? My mistake.

btw, how are you doing those green bars? I like.

If you want to scale, you'll need to get over this. When you find someone, give them small projects (not related to your larger clients) so if they drop the ball, it won't impact you as much. You could even get a couple of new clients under a business name rather than your personal brand, which will allow you to experiment a bit more with this side of things.

But then it will get interesting when I have to hit 8k by the end of month 4 and so on.

You need to focus on the real impact that your writing has for your clients and tie your price to that rather than your time. In the case of the casinos, rather than saving it's $500 to write this page of copy, you need to sell the results. For example, $10,000 for an email marketing campaign that will increase the number of people visiting the casino by 5%. Read this book, now.

This upcoming workshop may also be of interest.

Yeah. Might be something worth looking into, but not right now.

Should I have waited 20 days to start so it could have been on the 1st? :D

Green bars I opened up paint and made it 1,000 pixel width, then I just draw a line at the pixel I'm at and fill in.. ($500=50% if the goal is $1,000)

It's been 7 days since my last post and I've made $1,134 since then.

So I'm in month 2 on day 6...

$3,278/$4,000 (end of month 3 benchmark)
ZerjAE4.png

This is all writing still. Been getting some great clients.. one of them even comped 8 meals for me and one other person at any restaurants in his 2 casinos near me. Lost my head a bit on Sunday contemplating the meaning of life, hah! Got nothing done.

To be honest I struggle coming up with a long-term plan, and when I try to think of one I waste the whole day and end up depressed. For now, I'm going to focus on improving my copywriting skills for my clients, which will serve useful no matter what I come up with. I figure getting paid to learn copywriting isn't such a bad gig for right now.

Other than that, just been grinding.

Grind on the mind... Have a good night :)

Edit: almost forgot.. I had a friend out here visiting for a week recently, and I warned him prior to coming out here that I didn't have much money and would have to work a fair amount. We still had a great time, but I was getting low on money at the end, and kinda hinted at that so he would stop suggesting things that costed a lot.

Then, he sent me this link.. http://www.thepennyhoarder.com/how-to-save-money-when-youre-living-paycheck-to-paycheck

Over facebook after he had gotten home. Maybe his intentions were good, but man I haven't felt so insulted in a long time. EXTREMELY motivating :)

What the heck is that haha. The whole article is cringe worthy, especially this;

'Just one more piece of motivation. If you can continue to save $100/month for the next 20 years (at 14% interest), you’ll end up with $106,022! Can you imagine? More than $100,000 in a bank account! '

.... 14% interest???????? LOL

I believe you set the bar too high mathematically if you believe that you want $1 million. how about start with $100,000 then work from there. You may seem disapponited as you said you have only made $30 in amazon sales so far. you need to look at the price of book, how many sales you need to make how many people. in what time frame are you making these sales etc.

If you can continue to save $100/month for the next 20 years (at 14% interest), you’ll end up with $106,022!

The following is a list of guys who have offered 14% annual interest returns: Bernard Madoff, Allen Stanford, Jordan Belfort, Nicholas Kosmo, Scott Rothstien, and most notably, Charles Ponzi. That said, at 14% interest, you'll most likely end up with nothing, an expensive lesson, and a punch in the gut for being so unequivocally ignorant.

More than $100,000 in a bank account!

The mediocrity is strong with this one.

focus on improving my copywriting skills for my clients

Definitely a skill that will serve you in many endeavors.

You have to admire the fastlane business he's running though. He has over a quarter million subscribers on his mailing list. Even if he did some gray area work like compiling his blog posts in an ebook, that would be a recipe for an alright time. Unfortunately, his target audience probably doesn't read or can not afford a $2.99 ebook.

If he has a quarter million dollars, he is monetizing in some way, I can assure that. That many subscribers, with any email marketing tool, would costs thousands/month.

It's time to set some real f*ckin goals. I'm fed up with my half-a$$ goals, shitty life, and shifty decision making. I have a progress thread on the INSIDERS, but it has no definite goals, just "do as much as possible" or "provide as much value as possible." I've come to realize those are shitty goals because you can't make a plan to "do as much as possible" or "provide as much value as possible".

It's time to see what committing 1 year of my life to something can bring me. I have the perfect life situation to do it, so f*ck it.

Therefore, I'm going to make $1,000,000 by November 11th, 2015. I'm going to do it in the fitness industry. Books/products/anything else I come up with.

Where I stand with it: I've got 1 book out. It has made around 20-30 sales on amazon. I have another one in the works about halfway done. I just finished a free offer for opt-ins. Now I'm going to use my KDP select free promotion days to drive the downloaders of my book to my site, where they will opt-in for my free e-book so I can start building a list. I know my stuff adds value to people; I just have to keep improving, keep putting products out, and market the shit out of them.

On top of that, I'm going to add some amazing feats of strength that are going to help me not only become a badass MF'er, but also give me significant credibility in my industry.

Feats:

Bench 350x1 (Current max: 245x5)
Squat: 400x1 (Current max: 215x5)
Deadlift: 450x1 (Current max: 300x6)
20 Handstand Push-Ups (Can hold a handstand coming off of a wall for 5-6 seconds)
Full Planche (Can do a tuck planche)
Manna (Can do Tuck L-sit)
Front Lever (Can do advanced tuck front lever)
Back Lever (Haven't tried yet, using skin the cats to stretch shoulders currently)
3 1-arm pullups (with each arm) (Getting better at controlled negatives, not fully controlled yet)
Splits 3 inches below parallel (Idk exactly how far I am, getting closer to normal splits, been practicing flexibility for over a month now)

Money:
Month 1- $1,000
Month 2- $2,000
Month 3- $4,000
Month 4- $8,000
Month 5- $15,000
Month 6- $25,000
Month 7- $50,000
Month 8- $100,000
Month 9- $250,000
Month 10- $450,000
Month 11- $700,000
Month 12- $1,000,000

Right now I make a little less than $1,000 a month (mostly freelance writing), and it stresses me out.

Main things I need to work on:
1. Collaborating with people. I can't do this on my own.
2. Improve my work ethic a little bit day by day.

After this post I will be activating a chrome app that blocks all sites that I spend too much time on. From 8am-8pm MST I will not be allowed on any of those sites, this being one of them. If any mod wants to ban me for coming on this site between those hours, please feel free.

I'll update my daily earnings every night.

FYI: I will not be acknowledging negative posts. Only positivity for me from here on out. That's not to say I will ignore constructive criticism. I need that. If I say anything negative or downer-like in this thread, I'd like for mods to feel free to ban me for that, too.

Today is the day I instantly change my life. I encourage anyone else to do the same.

Have a wonderful Tuesday.

Not a bad way to look at it. You're doing exactly what I'm doing. Just releasing another fitness book on to Kindle as we speak. An amazing 2015... why the hell not? Let's go.

Take my advice, this is a lazy way out sir. As I said, I don't want to waste my time following this thread only to see you make significantly less than you need by month 4 or 5.
