Y'all are all so deep and serious. Any comedy fans out there?
Give me some Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, Step Brothers, Superbad, Anchorman, etc.
I am a huge stand up fan. I love all the Louie CK, all the new Dave Chappelle, and any Bill Burr.

Jim Jeffries "BARE" had the funniest and most compelling argument concerning the 2nd Ammendment.

Trance - trippy scifi and beautifully shot
Predestination - scifi mindfuck
Moon - more weird scifi lol
Coherence - indie scifi

I agree with others who have recommended anime. It's really just a style of animation with tons of genres within it. It's not all kids stuff like you may think. But... there is a lot of kids or teen focused stuff and although I enjoy some as I grew up with it, I'd rather recommend some more grown up stuff. I'm a big fan of the anime director Satoshi Kon, he is fantastic.

Paprika - I believe Inception was heavily inspired by this movie? About dreams
Perfect Blue

some other anime ones
Ghost In The Shell
Akira

For generally more wholesome or kid friendly stuff check out Hayao Miyazaki. His movies often deal with themes about our relationship with nature and technology.

Spirited Away - his most famous movie
The Wind Rises - a bit more mature as it deals with the topic of technology (planes) and war

Trouble with the Curve, great movie, guarantee you will enjoy it.
Jasper Jones, kind of an Australian To Kill a Mockingbird.
Rocket Man, great biopic on Elton John.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
Old movie Cool Hand Luke is a must see.
Oh and Gran Torino.
I had a friend pester me to watch cool hand luke for yeeeeeears. Finally did on a long haul flight one day and it's been one of my faves since.

For recent, I can never go past my boy Tarantino so probably once upon a time in hollywood.

I've heard really good things about Gerald's game but haven't seen it yet. Read the book way back in the day though and it's vintage Stephen King.

I highly recommend for anyone who saw "Passengers" to check out this video (spoiler warning - this video assumes you've seen the movie...):

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gksxu-yeWcU

It shows how the movie could have been made FAR better with some re-arranging of the plot points. I honestly have to agree with them. I think if the filmmakers had gone with this version a lot more people would have sung its praises.

I enjoyed Passengers but did remember leaving the film thinking that the screenplay could have been much better, it had a bit of a Titanic love story angle to it.

Primer. A time travel indie movie. You have to pay close attention and even then, you're still not entirely sure what happened.

Is there anything worth seeing? Something recent, or near recent?

I haven't been to a movie in probably a year, maybe two. Can't remember the last time I was at a theater.

Is there anything worth seeing?

What do you recommend for someone who is sick of tired of rehashed action (as if we need another car chase through the third-world market) and superhero nonsense?

I can't believe no one has recommended Ford vs. Ferrari to you yet! I do. It's filled with practical stunt driving and is definitely meant for big-screen theater watching. Moreover, it is extraordinarily passionate and sincere. I'm hoping you saw it already, but if not, I recommend you try.

Please don't recommend a Superhero or Marvel movie, I hate them.

I like cerebral and human interest movies like Interstellar.

Typically the more action (car chases, shooting etc) there is, the more I hate the movie.

I thought Ad Astra would be good, but I didn't hear anything positive about it.

Midway looks intriguing and might tickle my WWII fascination.

Go watch The Irishman its out in some select theaters. Or it comes out Tuesday on Netflix.I watched it last night and it was really good. Robert De Niro , Joe Pesci , Al Pacino

If you are into aliens and spirituality "The Cosmic Secret" it's a great documentary that came out just yesterday. And you can't watch it as fiction and still have fun.

I can't believe no one has recommended Ford vs. Ferrari to you yet!

In the trailer I saw a bunch of racing scenes and car chases.

If there ever was a way to turn me off to a movie is to show a car chase in the trailer. I've already seen 56,432 car chases (with live action close ups of gear shifting) I don't need to make it one more -- they're all a turn off, a great time to hit the shitter if I ever get stuck watching one. ;)

Gone Girl by David Fincher is my favorite movie of all time. I chose it randomly on a flight from Thailand to the US and was absolutely shocked.

As a motorsport fan, the fact that they have endless gears and the only thing they have to do to go faster is put the pedal down another 6 inches when they are already halfway down mulsanne straight at le mans... skip lol.

And somehow I don't feel sorry for poor little garagistes ford haha.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a "must see," but I saw Ford v. Ferrari last night and I think anyone in this group would likely enjoy it. I thought of you all when one character tells another that a bunch of corporate drones hate themselves, but they hate him more because they know he's not like them.

@MJ DeMarco -- Not sure if this is quite your cup of tea but Gaspar Noe's "Enter the Void" hit me really deep in the feels.

It's really disorienting, a bit horrifying, and at the same time, leaves you in an (almost) hopeful mood at the end. Anyways, I really liked it.

Fair warning though, it's around 4 hours long and is an ab-so-lute mindf*ck.

Everyone who enjoys more cerebral movies should know David Lynch. Mulholland Drive is one of my favorite movies and already a classic. I even stumbled over a ranking once where it was voted the best movie of the 21st century by film critics.

Made a bit of a detour to something kind of horror (but not really). I'm a big fan of the guys at red letter media and saw some old videos of them raving about Overlord (paratroopers dropped into Germany that meet a nazi zombie experiment lol - the opening scenes were pretty slick, really liked it overall) and another called The Witch from 2015 by a first time director - he won best director at sundance.

Not usually my thing but good in a sea of shit

I heard a lot of good things about The Lighthouse, from the makers of The Witch.

I really enjoyed The Terror as well.

I like historical and war movies, but the patriotism is a huge turn-off for me. So that reason it's better to watch something made by countries who lost the war, like this:

I've heard a lot of excellent reviews about The Irishmen.

Only watch a handful of movies a year and it seems to be one of them that is worth the watch for me.

Saw "Knives Out" the other day. Really enjoyable "who dun it" flick.

Would have been better if Daniel Craig wasn't doing a super thick southern accent, but that's a minor nitpick.

Only recent or near recent movies that were memorable for me are Blackkklansman and Once upon a time in Hollywood. I really liked Once upon a time in Hollywood. I watched it twice on an airplane when flying back home from Asia and will probably buy it when Blu-ray becomes available. It's definitely a Tarantino movie but quite different to many of his recent movies, it's more relaxed and not full of violence. I think it resembles Jackie Brown a little bit in overall atmosphere and pace. Has excellent actors too, DiCaprio, Pitt, Pacino, etc...

Movies that made me think (and happen to be some of my favorites):
- Vivarium
- Donnie Darko (director's cut)
- CUBE (the original one)
- Primer
- Memento
- Fight Club (I've seen this one about 9 times)
- Ex Machina
- Blade Runner and BR2049 (director's cuts)
- Mr. Nobody
- Looper
- Chappie
- Elysium
- Tron (1982)
- Tron: Legacy
- Interstellar
- Oblivion
- Gladiator
- The Matrix (original trilogy)
- Training Day
- Seven

Bonus:
This isn't a movie but House MD is probably one of the best shows ever made for TV.

I like some of the classical scenes in different movies that teach you something about life, super-condensed in a few minutes.
