Here are a few more motivational songs that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Let me know what you guys think!

I never understood the lyrics;

"They'll call me freedom, just like a waving flag"

With a literal interpretation, there is nothing free about a flag. A flag is forever chained to a poll, while at the mercy of the wind and the elements.

With a figurative interpretation, not all flags represent freedom. The North Korean flag, the old soviet union flag, the nazi flag, the Chinese flag, etc, etc

I would understand "They'll call me freedom, just like a soaring eagle".. while that would be a true statement, it doesn't have the ring that the real lyrics have.

Safe to say I don't like K'naan.

Speaking for myself, I believe it to represent the figurative/symbolic meaning behind a flag (as opposed to the literal meaning).

With a figurative interpretation, not all flags represent freedom. The North Korean flag, the old soviet union flag, the nazi flag, the Chinese flag, etc.

A flag holds meaning for a group of individuals, not all individuals.

Nobody ever accused me of being the sharpest pencil in the box, but I think I understand the association.

I would understand "They'll call me freedom, just like a soaring eagle".. while that would be a true statement, it doesn't have the ring that the real lyrics have.

This also wouldn't represent freedom to everybody since an eagle has less meaning to the world population than a flag. The eagle may have a symbolic meaning of freedom for a group of individuals.

Safe to say I don't like K'naan.

I'm assuming that you mean his music unless I am mistaken and you also happen to know him.

My assumption is that an individual who doesn't understanding why something is popular (eg. this song, the iPad, pet rock, etc.) means that if that individual was presented with such a niche idea they would not have been able to fastlane from it.

Best regards.

I never meant for the eagle to be symbolic of anything. The simple fact is that there is nothing more free than being able to soar above everything, fly where you want, visit new places, etc. (which if we were to use symbolism would be akin to a fastlaner with financial freedom, able to go wherever and do whatever he or she pleases)

Nobody can deny that an eagle (one in the wild and not in captivity) is free.

I honestly don't think there is anyone in North Korea who really believes they are free. To the outside world, it is safe to assume most if not all free peoples look to the North Korean flag as a sign of Soviet Era oppression.

I've worked with K'naan at Free The Children in Toronto. I've never met a more irritating and self righteous person in my life thus far. His music is fine.

I never said I didn't understand why the song is popular, it's clearly a catchy song that would resonate with millions of oppressed (or formerly oppressed) people in the world. I said I don't understand why the lyrics are never questioned (in a global society that is becoming ever more apathetic on issues of far more importance.)

Take most of the songs by Lady Gaga or Kesha. They are popular because they are catchy and fun and people can dance to them. But give their songs to an english professor to dissect, and he/she won't be able to, because they make absolutely no sense.

This is true and probably why English professors can't create commercially viable music. (thank god)

Thanks for sharing!

Why do the words need meaning that can be dissected? Why can't they just have the same position in a song as instruments to add the feeling of an emotion without attaching a specific thought (like lyrics do) to each note. The total of it all equals something we enjoy regardless if there are specific words overlaid on top which tells us a meaning.

I can't speak for Ryan, but perhaps there are individuals who are more literal/scientific/algorithmic so different songs would appeal to them. We're not all the same you know! ;)

Best regards.

Hm... Get your logic out of here... :p

No, you're right. Ryan just happened to be at the tail end of me getting sick of people questioning songs due to lyrics. I'm definitely a person who likes songs whose lyrics are not really meaningful. Ex: Deadmau5

Exactly as Rickson says. When I seek out music that appeals to me, it is usually about the lyrics first (that I can relate to), then the beat/instruments (although I like classical as well).

I typically stay away from songs about love or drinking/gambling, or songs that are very symbolic.

I LOVE spanish Reggaeton, french rap, Slovak dance music, and German hard rock (Rammstein)... although I barely understand any of them.

The one exception for me would be techno/dance music, which is perfect for driving at night.

Haven't contributed to this thread in a while and many new songs have been added to my play lists.

From the Social Network-

Gimme Shelter

Theme song from Nip/Tuck

To me these lyrics mean a lot, because as an entrepreneur, I am working on my business while many of my friends are out having fun, putting life goals last.

They always telling me no one is working as hard as you
And even though I laugh it off, man its probably true
Cause while all of my closest friends out partying
I'm just here making all the music that they party too

Talent and creativity imo has no end. What I like about this guy is his use of dynamics and the ability to get a strong audience reaction because of it. He's definitely an advanced player who understands that low volume and technique has the ability to win over high volume and speed. Alot of guys don't get that. Thanks for posting.
