Love the bit where he talks about how the world is moving from "IT" to "DT". Once again, illustrating the importance of providing OTHER people value and happiness before yours. This is "the mystery of money" in today's economy.

When he talks about DT, "Data Technology", he talking about how several technology trends are coming together to change how companies do business, namely the use of "Big Data". With big data I have access to information that was not available before to better customize my product to the consumer. In another talk he expounds on that to C2B or Consumer to Business. In C2B the customer truly comes first, as merc said above it's about adding the most value. One of the examples for Ma was shipping a container of clothing with 10,000 of the same shirt is not as good as shipping 10,000 shirts of multiple, customer-selected styles.

The manufacturing industry of the future will not need oil because data will become the world's largest source of energy, says Alibaba founder and executive chair Jack Ma.

Ma, 50, made the comments Tuesday at the opening of 2015 Big Data Expo in Guiyang, the capital of southwest China's Guizhou province.

Responding to criticism that Alibaba's Taobao e-commerce platform has put a lot of local and small enterprises out of business, Ma said not many people took them seriously 13 years ago when China's e-commerce industry warned that it would soon have a massive impact on manufacturing, production and sales, and even society as a whole.

Ten years from now, Ma said, people out of business might say the same thing about big data, which refers to the use of predictive analytics or other advanced methods to extract value from a large amount of information.

Ma believes the next 30 years will be the most wonderful and most worthy of anticipation in human history, but also the most frightening. He said he was recently taken aback while interviewing six young people who used internet and big data terms he did not completely understand. He also said, however, that the more he starts to understand, the more nervous he will be.

Upgrading and evolving a business requires a lot of sacrifice and deep thought, Ma said. The mass production of data and the commercialization of society will no doubt change our way of living and the economic system, and no one knows what this next technological revolution will bring, he added.

According to Ma, the shift from information technology (IT) to data technology (DT) is not an upgrade but a competition.

"The IT era is about making yourself more powerful, the DT era is about others being more powerful. The IT era lets other people service you, the DT era lets you service other people. The IT era uses yesterday's information to analyze and control the future, whereas the DT era is about creating the future," he said.

"The IT era lets 20% of enterprises become more and more powerful, while 80% of enterprises might be unable to adapt. The DT era releases the power of 80% of enterprises," he added.

The manufacturing industry of the future will no longer be just concerned with making products, because these products also need to be able to think, speak and ineract. "The IT era turned people into robots, but the DT era will turn robots into intelligent people," Ma said, adding that all manufacturing companies in the future will have to be involved with the internet and big data.

In his concluding remarks, Ma encouraged everyone to embrace the this revolutionary era by changing yourself rather than trying to change other people. This way you won't be blaming big data in 10 years time, he said, adding that we should all work together to turn data into a massive source of energy for humans in the future.

@ DiemTrader thanks for sharing the Jack Ma video!

Guys with all this talk about..."IT" to "DT"

I'm surprised no one here mentions the GOLD!

The entire video is good, however the GOLD in this video presentation starts @ 4:20 and ends @ 4:40

''Opportunity ALWAYS lays in the place where people COMPLAIN... some people sit there and COMPLAIN ...and I think if I can solve that complaint/problem I can be SUCCESSFUL!'' (Thats what I did in 1994 Jack Ma)

...AND he did it BIG Time!
