I have an invention I'd like to pursue but I have no idea how to proceed.

How do you decide when you should patent and when you should just brand and go with it?

As far as I know the patent eliminates competition for a set period of time. Is that the main benefit?

If I elect to patent, what is the quickest and least expensive method of making it happen and how do I do it without having my invention stolen?

How do you cut an investor in and where do you find an investor without giving away your idea?

I just had another thought come to mind. How do you decide that kickstarter is a good way to approach this? What I mean is could someone see my idea on kickstarter and go patent it?

Thanks Raul, I'm not interested in licensing my idea however the provisional patent thing was valuable, I'll check that out.

This will sell. I'm not worried about that. Just hoping to figure out how to proceed.

+1 for provisional patent. Cheap and quick
Then your safe to get them out on the market to test sales. Cheapest way to start is online then move to some Mom and Pop's.

If they sale really good Walgreen's is one of the easiest retailers to test at. Good Luck!

Thanks all for your help. I'm leaning toward doing a kickstarter. I'm thinking about getting the provisional patent then approaching someone with kickstarter experience and seeing what we can put together.

Kickstarters are hard. You have to have an amazing idea, great copy, a great video and a shit ton of luck. Id do a landing page to generate atleast some interest, then do a kickstarter. They're very time consuming.

Seems to me you're really focused on the protection of your idea. Why are you so sure it's worth protecting?

Before any of that, the first thing you do, is get market validation.
Get 1 SALE!

Your entire focus should be on this

"What is the fastest and most efficient way for me to get 1 sale?"

Then you get 2.
Then 5.
then 20.
Then 100.
Then 1000.

so on and so forth.

Sales is the only thing that matters!

If kickstarter is that route, that by all means.
If bringing on an investor is the fastest way to get sales, then do it.

Just remember, No Sales = No business.

Check out the progress thread on the Paintbrush Cover. Sal was asking similar questions a few years ago. Now he's in major retailers and got a deal on Shark Tank. That thread is a great roadmap for someone in your situation. From IP to manufacturing, to distribution, he's got you covered. I believe it is on the Inside.
