With a full time job and family I've been searching for something I can do in my spare time to get my feet wet, learn, and build experience to move on to bigger things. I've selected a niche which I belong to and have an idea of combining two products to solve a problem I've encountered. But, just because I think it's a great solution to a problem I've been having, doesn't mean anyone else will. I'm looking to test out my idea with as little investment as possible.
An analogy to illustrate my concept for discussion sake:
Lets say you've developed a golf shirt that incorporates an electronic scorekeeper on the sleeve. Assume that at least 60% of golfers wear this exact shirt and aren't particular about the style and color, they just wear them. The existing product (golf shirt) would simply have to be modified to house the scorekeeper via a sewn on pouch or something.
1) Since this is something that has to be demonstrated, do you just make a mock up and do test sales based on an image of that?
2) Is it worth going for a provisional patent if none exists at this stage?
3) How would you suggest test marketing that type of product (the golf shirt example).
4) Provided that you actually get positive results from the testing, do you start with a small run of say 50 or so? What storefront would you use for this type of product?
Since TMF does not really go into detail on the process, understandably since each scenario is different, I'm looking for advice on how to go forth with testing.
Any help appreciated.
