I use addblock, I find most site's unreadable without those annoying things.
Including facebook, youtube, blogs that I read etc.
In the times that I did not have addblock,
If a site had to many adds, or annoying adds, I would click the big X in the corner right away.
No matter what kind of interesting content they had, also I would -never- sign up for their newsletter.
That being said: if a site throws a lot of pop-ups, especially before giving me any value it already shows me that they're not worth my time.
I try to mimic that on my site: Ex: No pop-up that blocks a user from reading content right away before they have the actual chance to read.
only 1 pop-up that they get once every 14 days once they hoovover the taskbar in their internet program (Like to change the site/press X)
Other than that an every present call to newsletter signup in the sidebar on the single posts and category posts page. and another one on the bottom after a blog post.
