Even if one can manage to turn a profit following their passion,
1) they must do a whole lot of things that have little to do with the passion, at least in the beginning when it sucks the most (say, it's writing - then checking emails, doing admin, maintaining plugins etc may not be very fun and frankly distracting - ah the nitty gritties that run the show or logistics that go with every operation...)
AND/OR
2) people really only pay for the part that's not very fun to begin with, except for the most 'passionate' of circumstances eg top singers where the 'passion' can seem to carry a significant value skew in the full array (hard to relate to without example, but easy with experience)

P.S. even when there's product-market-founder fit where founder=passion, the fit can take slowlane-like timescales to be found and monetized, albeit with fastlane profit potential if done right (productized and all)
