Hello all! Contrary to my profile name, my real name is not Fred, nor am I overly furtive.
I was introduced to this forum from MJ's book The Millionaire Fastlane . A superb book in my opinion that echoed sentiments I have been feeling, but didn't know how to express. Who am I to talk about money or business, because as per title, I am a 24 year old university student studying veterinary medicine. It is a 6 year program in my country and I am on my 4-th year now. I chose this path, because it seemed like I could do some good, while having a prestigious career and to be quite honest it seemed like the only career I could ever even try to keep doing for the rest of my life. I also didn't have another plan and desperately needed to get out of my mother's house. Escaping that hellhole seemed like victory at the time.
I knew the risks of my field beforehand, but didn't factor in how corporate it all is when clinics are competing for patients and reviewing your performance all the time. Underperforming in this field is not willing to work ludicrous hours for mediocre pay in a demanding work setting. It all started to wear me down when I got a job at my university clinic. I was increasingly hesitant about what I am pursuing and whether it is worth it.
In October we had the clinic's anniversary and I got blackout drunk and turned into a volatile maniac. I have no recollection of the night, but woke up in the jail after my actions. I was swiftly fired and the small chances I had in my field got snuffed right there since this field is so small that everybody knows everybody. I am no stranger to alcohol, but I have never been an angry drunk and I knew something had to change. I felt terrible and knew that I would be hurting people I care about again if I let this stress grind me down. You can say that was my FTE. That's when I found this book and knew I had to find my own way.
I haven't dropped out yet, because it has seemed pointless (sunken costs fallacy), but I can't keep doing this and every moment seems wasted.
