Has your ME-BIAS backed you into a corner of doing nothing?
Has your ME-BIAS filtered out thousands of good, life-changing business ideas into no ideas?
Has your ME-BIAS stopped you from grinding into a new person and learning new skills?
Has your ME-BIAS kept you on the couch, lamenting about how you don't have an ideas?
Has your ME-BIAS kept YOU the same this year, like last year, and the year before that?

An entrepreneur on the INSIDERS forum recently complained that he couldn't identify any ideas.

After a few questions, it become clear why. The entrepreneur had a ME-BIAS.

In neuroscience, your reticular activating system (RAS) is basically a form of confirmation bias to see what your brain has prioritized into its consciousness. For example, if you buy a new car, you'll suddenly see that car everywhere. If you believe X, your brain will start to see evidence of X being true.

This same concept applies to business opportunities.

People who complain about "not seeing ideas" have a selfish, narrow-minded ME-BIAS and their RAS does the rest.

Instead of thinking, "What can my business do for the world? Or my community?" they errantly think "What can this business do for me?"

The ME-BIAS.

Opportunities must tightly fit into their tiny box of me, me, and me, often relating to loves, passions, interests, and personal desires. It's a limited internal focus vs a broader market viewpoint. In the end, opportunities are limitedly filtered through the ME-BIAS, creating very limited ideas for life-changing pursuits.

Well it's no shock you can't find an idea when you've backed yourself into a corner of having that idea meet your ME-BIAS.

When you drop a ME-BIAS, suddenly the world opens up to you, and opportunities are everywhere.

In my community, I know I could start a landscaping company and immediately earn five figures monthly simply by executing better. If I had a ME-BIAS, a landscape maintenance business would NOT be seen as an opportunity. And yet if I was just getting started as an entrepreneur, running that business for 3 or 4 years could change my life, financial-wise, leadership-wise, hiring-wise, management-wise, and for so many other opportunities for personal development.

In the ultimate irony, dropping your ME-BIAS ends up indirectly serving you ... you do indeed feed the ME.

I fully admit to having a ME-BIAS
  • I tend to mistrust teachers and experts, because I think „this does not apply to ME“ and „I can do it better“
  • I tend to prefer creative and novel business ideas to satisfy MY NEED OF RECOGNITION, when past experience has shown that it might be very risky to start something completely new, opposed to improving on something that works very well already.
  • I suffer from confirmation bias, because „I CAN‘T HAVE BAD IDEAS

I think ALL OF US operate with some form of ME-BIAS.

The question is, does it run our life?

Is it the dominant predisposition 100% of the time?

This post is so profound it is absolutely unbelievable! The ME-BIAS doesn’t only affect our business life, it affects every single area of our lives. It affects our baseline level of happiness, our relationships, AND our own health.

We selfishly think: “How can this business make ME a lot of money? How can I impress that person and stroke MY ego? What can I buy so that people can see how much money I make? How can I not embarrass MYSELF?”

What all these process have in common is everything must revolve around ME. Once we leave this ME-BIAS and start focusing on what we can give, on what others want, then we leave so much suffering behind.

Since we no longer need anything from anyone, we feel fulfilled. Our cortisol levels go down because we start to live in abundance rather than scarcity. Since our stress levels decreased and bodies start to enter into a state of HEALTH, HEALING and HAPPINESS.

We live in abundance and are constantly looking to give. We are the first to smile at a stranger. We’re the first to crack a joke and be positive. When we make a social mistake we don’t care about being embarrassed, because it’s not about ME anymore. We make the right choices in our business because it’s not about ME and now it’s about the customer.

Leaving the ME-BIAS behind isn’t easy, but it can be done. I still have a long way to go. However, life is becoming much more enjoyable because of this mindset shift. Thanks for this post MJ.

One of the most common way of business idea generation is to improve existing business practice in the market place that are already profitable.

When someone says there is no business idea it is like saying there are no profitable business right now or all the profitable business are perfect and have no room for improvement.

Instead of thinking, "What can my business do for the world? Or my community?" they errantly think "What can this business do for me?"

I think I was guilty of this for years (too much 4HWW indoctrination). I was too selfish. It was all about, "How much money can *I* make?" vs "How much can I help my clients?"

It's a big mental shift to make. But it's a much more rewarding way of doing business (not to mention the boost in referrals!)

Dropping the ME and looking around was the best thing I ever did for business. By identifying things I could do to HELP other people, my business started doing better than ever. By focusing on others, I indirectly benefitted myself in unimaginable ways. Giving returns ten-fold.

My own bias that holds me back is that people from more developed countries have it easier in almost every aspect of their lives. I feel like I have to struggle just to get to where they're already at. And as a consequence, I'm starting at a couple of years of disadvantage.

Also, although I live in a very beautiful country, I tend to focus on the negative aspects of it, like corruption, lack of opportunities, etc, and can't enjoy what my country has to offer.

I know what I say is at least partially true, but it's up to me to use it to my advantage and get stronger and enjoy myself more in the process.

I'm 6-months into a gardening enterprise over in the UK (after reading all your books but having never started something myself). So far, I've had lots of demand, lots of challenges!

Would be very intrigued to hear where you think execution could be improved in the industry @MJ DeMarco

Agree that if looking at a 3 or 4 year timeframe there is a lot of scope for personal development and lots of need to fill for customers...

I have been giving this topic a fair bit of consideration the last few hours. I think the me-bias really often stems from it being ME who takes the risk to start, it should be ME who gets the value vouchers generated. Obviously this is flawed thinking as your customer is the one providing value vouchers, so they need to receive the value. When considering my own personal bias, I often find I suffer from this similar but different affliction. I want to create great value for the disenfranchised, but that subgroup often cannot afford a product regardless of value. Very interesting topic and enjoying the takes and discussion thus far.

I'm pretty sure I have also a too strong ME-thinking, but there comes the question, how did you change your mind in this regard and start thinking more about others?
I try it very often but somehow my patterns of thinking are deep.
I do not have a lot of people in my life but now and then I try to offer my help to them and place my own interests after theirs.
Somehow it doesn't really click for me, what was it for you that made the change in thinking?

I know it's a hated book by many, but it can really help you change your mindset to a "people-first" mindset.

Thank you very much for the hint. In fact, I finished the book some weeks ago. Yes it definitly helps with some things but still, I feel stuck. Maybe I do expect too much to be happening in a too short time frame...

Many people feel it's manipulation and inauthentic
It is pretty much basic social eq stuffs being condensed.

Be nice. Make others feel wanted and being important, remember their names. Talk in term of their needs not yours.

It is still useful because common senses are not so common after all.
