A simple principle from Paul Akers' ('2-second Lean') : "Fix what bugs you!"
We should stop accepting sources of irritation the way they are, and fix them immediately, with improvisation and simple solutions. This applies to basic things, like cleaning, changing a light bulb, ergonomics.
It's the endless battle against decay / entropy. Applies to your health, mind, behaviour, relationships and many business systems. It means using your irritation instinct (internal warning system) to address a matter before it turns into a real problem. So it's preventative, not reactive. Requires a person to pay attention to their environment. Awareness. Zen? Something like that.
Does this lead to perfectionism? No, because it targets the removal of irritation only.
Most are not trained to take ownership of the source/problem causing their bad emotion, just in controlling their external reaction. We often accept minor irritation as a daily fact, effectively ignoring why it's there. Unless you are hungry or tired, irritation is a signal something is not the way it should be.
The principle is important in training employees. Otherwise they will be unhappy, will perform badly, and they will blame you as the leader! You did not train them to be custodians of their work environment.
If you follow this principle, great, tell me how? For example, Paul Akers' mandates employees spend 30 minutes at start of work day to clean, organize and improve work environment.
Why aren't we doing that as entrepreneurs? Or should we just instinctively react? I believe more in a batch solution. Like scheduling it. "Today I will remove 10 sources of irritation". It can be done quicker that way and when actively searching for sources of irritation, you will remove even minor sources of irritation/distraction, that otherwise are not painful enough to notice!
