Financing product development.

Is self-financing the only option for physical product development? This would be pre-sales stage development; however the base technology I have been working with has huge sales volume in other markets; my concept is a complete twist on that technology. I am merging a hot growth market with this technology. So.... does that make it easier for an investor to evaluate? I actually cant provide a prototype unless its developed because it has a formula with it. I notice that product developers run into financing problems regularly. Perhaps, the contract manufacture would front the cost of development? It is a B2C product but the upside is in the millions of units based on sales of current usage of the technology and the market that I am meshing it with.
