Hello guys,

I'm 31y and have a normal 9-5 job routine and have been faking that I'm following the scripted path in order to socialize with people in general such as family members, friends, and coworkers.

In daily interactions, I'm pretending to save money for a house deposit, get a 30-year mortgage, get a partner, have kids and etc.

The idea if anyone approaches me asking when I'm going to act in it I will blame and divert to uncontrollable variables...economy, unstable job market, housing market, government and wall street.

In reality, I'm debt-free, full-time employed and able to save 60% of the net income and building a diversified dividend portfolio to generate income for early retirement, I have nearly 60k invested and the dividends are being reinvested automatically via RDP plan.

Just wondering, if there may be any drawbacks doing it or fake it until you make it?

Wait.. so you are or aren’t following the scripted path?

It sounds to me like you’re investing your disposable income into something other than your own business.

Also, why not just be honest with those around you about what you’re doing?

The way you are describing it seems like you are in the slowlane faking to be in the sidelane. I don't really understand why. There is nothing really unconventional about saving disposable income and invensting it in the stock market.

Yes, job-wise as that generates my income. I'm in the slowlane.

My concern is actually at the workplace where most people have a scripted life/mindset.

For instance, my superior has quietly laid off one of my colleagues after he said several times that would rather follow an entrepreneurship journal instead of a 9-5 career.

Also, I see it as a way to get along and play the corporate 'game'... how many times I was told by management that upcoming projects will be rolling out, implementations, opportunities? BUT, after a few months, nothing happened whatsoever or 'plans' have changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

There's nothing wrong with keeping your cards close to your chest and playing the corporate game, especially if you have fastlane aspirations. Have you read both books?

Maybe he was doing your co-worker a favor? Now he can collect unemployment while having time to peruse his dream.

Happened to a friend of mine. His boss really liked him but knew he wanted to start his own business so he "layed him off" giving him time and money to launch his start up.

Possibly, I'm unsure of the guy's financial position but hopefully, he will pursue it.

I take that as an example of how it's important to pay attention to what you say...an inappropriate sentence said in the workplace may ruin/retard/weak your future plans.

That goes without saying. You wouldn't want to jeopardize any future you've got by saying the wrong thing, just look at how many celebrities and CEOs are haunted by past tweets and statements. Still, if I were in your position, I would be confident and stand by my values without fear. You might find more opportunities to reach your goals that way.

Welcome to the forum, Sarah!

If your circumstances cause you to feel that it's necessary for you to fly under the radar, I don't see anything wrong with that. Discretion is never out of place.

Not everyone will feel threatened by sharing their fastlane plans with the people close to them. However, your situation may be different.

It probably also goes without saying that you need a few different friends, ones that you ARE free to brainstorm/mastermind with about entrepreneurial pursuits.

Side note:
The title of the thread got me thinking, before I read your actual question, that "socializing" itself is completely different in the fastlane context than in the scripted one.

The social skills you need to develop as a fastlaner are things like pitching your services, leading employees, inspiring others, getting them on board, and making strategic alliances with partners, suppliers, and industry leaders.

It begs the question—and I'm challenged by this myself—are we making intentional strides forward to develop THOSE kinds of social skills? Are we making it a point to pursue the kinds of interactions where we'll be stretched in those areas?

@sarahfisher what is your why?

why are you here? where are you trying to get? what is your why?

let that drive you. let them engage you.

play the game to get the fuel for the machine that gets you where you need to get.

worry less about others and spend time deciding what you want. then go get it.

The social skills you need to develop as a fastlaner
As well, there are two skills which I'm working to develop which is storytelling (make up a story to relate to someone else or group of people) and observation (speak less and listen more), watch actions not words/commentary.
