Not enough people on this forum do enough in person networking.

On the other hand, I've gone to plenty of networking events (mostly on meetup.com) and it seems there are many people just addicted to networking. They think they're getting ahead, pass out dozens of business cards but aren't making true progress.

To the more experienced networkers, how do you do it?

- Do you go to the same meetup group repeatedly?
- Do you go to specialized or general meetups?
- Do you try to talk to 1-3 people or 7-8?
etc.

I like going to various meet ups for different things that interest me. One thing that I think people forget about networking is that it isn't just a one time introduction. I like to stay in touch as much as possible with the people i want to see. I send emails to stay in touch and whenever possible meet up for a drink or get together.

networking to me is meeting new people, but most importantly following up and through with people!

The person you just met, might mean something big to your business or you might have the missing piece to his puzzle!

It's all about making new relationships that you have to nurture and grow...it takes time and effort!

I like focused networking. For instance - I find somebody I want to know, find out what groups they participate in and then join or attend that group.

I don't schedule random networking. Actually I think trade association meetings are hilarious. I used to go to their meetings and watch 50 engineers market to each other. :banghead:
