Wait for it...

Yes, what was really weird was that there is a zipline in the game that you grab and you slide down, then you jump off and since your body thinks you are going forward you lean back for the landing. The first time I almost fell backwards when it happened. The second time I knew about it and was determined to stand up straight, but I still almost fell backwards. Sometimes your brain can't control your body's reflexes.

I LOVE Fortnite. Amazing game!

I hold masterminds with friends while we play and discuss business across the world - AND I waste plenty of time playing for fun.

But all work and no play makes jack a dull boy - I have worked hard with no play in the past and it wasn't good.

I think what's missing in this thread (other than a list of names for ppl to squad up with to chat biz while they play ;) ) is the HUGE market esports has become and is still rapidly growing. I am lucky to have grown up with some of the pioneers in the space who now own professional e-sports teams. It is amazing to see the growth behind esports. All the Vegas casinos (and casinos world wide) are opening esports arenas in their casinos now to cater to the younger generation.

Be smart, look at the space and figure out something that you can do to profit from it. The entire space is still very much in its infancy. Generations of wealth will be made by those who figure out how to solve problems and grow the space.

First and foremost, bravo to epic games. Great fastlanin'

I'm 23 now and through 12-18 I was pretty addicted to video games, I would play in every waking minute (literally, every, single, minute) possible (Runescape, COD).

Now, every time I play a video game at a friends or something (and I'm not claiming this is a superior/healthy relationship) I get the feeling of dread and regret that I am wasting life away. I cannot enjoy a single minute!

As things like smartphone addiction, gaming addiction surge, all I can think about is how the playing field opens up for those who consciously chose to develop and build as opposed to living through the virtual world.

There is no doubt that their are huge brain changes going on the more we indulge in addictive tech. Our reward systems grow faulty, attention spans dissolve, we lose the core goal striving mechanism that us to 2018. Why bother achieving xyz when I can make my brain buzz 10x more with just one swipe?

I think about social/porn/gaming as junk food for the mind. It's a little abstract, but thats essentially it. Difference is, you can see when someone is overweight through too much food consumption. But, you can't physically see the effects on someones brain through too much mental junk food...

I cannot see this slowing down, quite the opposite.

Each day I come downstairs to talk with my family and I cannot get a word from them. Mum, Step Dad, Sister all glued to their screens and any attempt of a conversation gets a one word answer, if any.

With all that being said I am very grateful to be alive in 2018 through this time of great change!

A great book if anyone is interested: The Shallows: How the internet is changing the way we think, read and remember.

Staying conscious (unscripted ) will undoubtedly be one of the core assets as a fastlaner in years to come.

If we are doing the AA thing, then me too! Sad to say but I was also a gaming addict for a long time :) I got hooked on mobile games but never racked up the same debt as some pp.

I’ve got friends who are 6 figures into mobile game loot boxes.

Sad to say but a lot of mobile game developers have this addiction down to a science and their target market, gamers are already pp who are susceptible to addiction.

80% of game profits come from loot boxes. And 80% of that profit comes from a few “whales” (industry term) who spend the most money.

The video game companies themselves are some of the most brutal work places as well. EA was rated worst place to work in America many times.

Interesting read.

The "Scriptification" of the masses is a great business model. And insanely popular.

Any players here?

Sounds like it's terribly fun. Like, terribly dangerous to getting anything else done!

I'm not much of a gamer, and had never heard of this one before MJ started the thread.
From the article above, it looks like the money all comes from "cosmetics?"
In other words, this is pay to dress up your doll for grown-ups, except that you're dressing up an avatar that blasts the hell out of the other players? Is that actually it? Or did I misunderstand the jargon-filled article?

I'd say that's fairly on the money.

A lot of thought goes into the psychology that makes it work.

My son and all his friends are nuts about it.

As other mentioned, Epic Games (the author the of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine behind it), noticed the shift to "games as a service" a few years ago, and pivoted from their past success models. Fortnite was cranked out in a few months from a pile of existing assets. The concept is very similar to a massively multiplayer version of 'The Hunger Games."

As someone mentioned, no amount of money can buy ANY gameplay advantage, only cosmetic items. ALL the money is made from cosmetic upgrades and other perks that are designed specifically to NOT allow any gameplay edge. You can play for free forever and never worry about being 'out-bought'. The game also changes every few months with a new theme. It'll be interesting to see how long they can keep this going. Its a massive, multi-platform, online, evolving entertainment concept.

I think that's really brilliant, by the way. I admire the company and their strategy, despite my tongue in cheek comment. Love the idea that skill can't lose to someone else putting more money into the game. Their character might show up to the fight with more style, but that doesn't influence each person's abilities in their own fighting style. Very cool!

I play a lot of league of legends and all the streamers for same have started streaming Fortnite also. This is certainly a burst in popularity.

" Fortnite is a co-op sandbox survival game developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly and published by Epic Games. The game was released as a paid-for early access title for Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on July 25, 2017, with a full free-to-play release expected in 2018."

Not sure if it's true, but my friend told me that "loot boxes" are missing in some international versions of the game (in general, not just limited to Fortnite) because they're considered gambling. Just some food for thought.

I'm not in the online gaming business, but there have been several such hits in the past couple of years: Angry Birds and World of Tanks. Both are "free to play" where you buy upgrades to improve your odds of winning.

WoT has been so popular, its CEO recently became a billionaire.

Whilst there are many factors which determine whether a game is successful, the core thing I see from these "online" multiplayer games is that they have to be competitive. Fortnite works (despite not having the best graphics) because it puts you straight into the action. Anyone can play (because it's free), and those who'll spend money will typically do so to give themselves more of a "competitive advantage" (although in Fortnite, I think all the transactions are cosmetic). If you want to see more about the model (or its negative effects), you'll do well to look at "pay to win".
