Firstly I would like to say, I have had depression for a while, and while I cannot say that I have enjoyed it, it has been a great learning experience.
Most people do not understand what depression really is. They think its you feeling sorry for yourself and that its easy to snap out of. I know it isn't, I have been at a very dark place three times. The last time I was sent to a mental hospital for a day.
Why am I telling you guys this? It's so you know I am with you when you tell me it is hard to do something.
I have had advice from a very trustworthy friend, who's insights can be worth their weight in gold. I am sure you guys have heard of the saying "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", well as my friend says, that's good and all but without knowing where you are going one thousand miles can turn into ten thousand or more.
My advice, that I have taken myself and have defiantly benefited from:
See someone about it
Get advice on how to manage it
Have a friend to confide in and to bring you up, especially when they are very dark
It may seem like a dark place, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, you simply need to stop digging the hole and start climbing out. (Sorry to mix metaphors, but it really does feel like that)
Depression for me has really been a blessing in the guise of a monster. While at first I could not do anything, and I would simply soak in my own feelings of misery and doubt, I have found that if you are able to bring yourself back up amazing things will happen.
Because of depression, I have more time to work on myself, I have become more enlightened of how my mind works and how I can use it to its best ability. I know I have posted before where I have been complaining, but the thing is we all suffer ups and downs, and I hope you don't judge me by this.
The easiest, and simultaneously hardest way to get out of the slump of depression whether minor or major is as follows:
Do something!
Do anything which is able to take your mind off of it!
Take an inventory of your soul and find out what you really want, set milestones and then do something about it!
I guarantee that if you do something on that list, and really stick to it, your life will change for the better.
With all my love and hope,
James
