Death of the video store

I thought it would be interesting to share with you guys the signs of a paradigm shift within my neighbourhood. Over only the last few months Rogers Video, the now bankrupt Blockbuster Video, and even the small niche video store pictured above were forced to close because of a single person's idea.

This just highlights the volatility of the brick and mortar business, seeing as an entire block of diners, novelty stores, and bookstores were also levelled to make room for the big boys. I found it funny when I took that picture to hear how may people walking by were so dumbfounded on what they were going to do without that store, as if they haven't heard of the internet or read the news in the last few years.

If you haven't heard of Zediva, that was another attempt to enter the market and undermine Netflix and Redbox, apparently these guys ran actual DVD players and rented out new releases which is legal, but the concept was so appealing they couldn't even keep up with demand.

While I'm certainly going to miss the wig and hair extension store across the street, that's just another lesson in having multiple income streams or a solid financial plan, because at anytime, anybody can come and pull the rug from under your feet, but such is life!
