From the FWIW department:

Recently we had to interview proctologists to remove the last remnants of the IRS audit we've been dealing with for the past couple years. We went through one of the 'special' ones - no red flags or anything, we just want to see how certain businesses work blah blah blah... every shred of paperwork you can think of.

In the first conversation the agent mentioned his office's disdain for our CPA firm and strongly hinted that was why we were getting the telescope rammed up our rear.

I don't know how you avoid that but we hadn't broken any rules. We took some deductions where the conversation was: "well, this one is iffy", "OK, but is it legal?", "Well, yeah, TECHNICALLY it meets the letter of the law but...."

The fact is that the IRS can reallllly wear you out in terms of time and expenses fighting them. Their resources are ever so slightly greater than yours and they have allllllllllllll day to spend on you if they choose to.

In the end, we gave up and agreed to pay a small sum. Frankly I think we could have saved the 10 grand if we spent another 20 fighting but it was killing our drive, energy and creativity to the point where it was cheaper to give in than it would be to fight.

Not that I am BITTER or anything but if you believe that the law means what it says, well, you just haven't dealt with it yet.
