Could you go 5 years doing no actual business related activity? Doing nothing but having fun: travel, experiment, be with your family and just do nothing real productive (seen from a financial standpoint that is). Could you actually do it?
It seems like this is the easiest thing in the world: Taking time of for 5 years and only do fun stuff. But many people have a big problem with this. Even I have a really nasty habit of doing business related stuff even when I should relax and just go with the flow. I mean, for me, it is a real stretch doing just fun stuff. It feels like I am wasting my valuable time on stuff that has no real value. Business and money has become more and more of value to me. The older I get the more rigid I become in my view of life.
It is not at all like it was when I was 16 and started selling Herbalife products. Then it was mostly fun and exciting. Now a days it has become a battle, a war almost to prove things to the world (a "I have a bigger dick than you" syndrome). This is not my way of an ideal life. Though, when you are in business it really becomes a necessary habit. You need to expand, you need to be hyper productive, you need to keep promises (promises that sometimes becomes nasty things to keep because your own suppliers and team fail to meet their promises to you and hence you can't meet your own promises to others. Something that creates hugh stress, because you are the one to blame. Feeling of fraud then comes into place because you feel like a lier even though you aren't a lier you just couldn't meet the obligations you honestly believed could be met), you need to honor obligations etc. Sometimes all this can be a little to much and the enjoyment that existed in the beginning can easily turn into dissatisfaction and ill health.
My mom is a workaholic. My dad was a real workaholic too. My older relatives are also workaholics. They work even when they are not really forced to do so. Why? Because they don't know what to do otherwise. Work is their life. Without it, they would certainly die of boredom (literally).
I just want to get a discussion going on the subject "without work and business, who am I really?".
I think it is no wonder why Howard Hughes became such a nutcase in his late years of his life. All that stress he endured must have broken him ultimately. Over stressed people make crazy things in the end. Better to stop it in time. I am not in such a condition though, but I am pretty certain me and all others can reach such conditions if we do more than we can bear just for the sake of being liked, perfect or whatever.
Long text, but I felt I needed to write of some steam.
