Don't know much about floating, but it sounds like they're expensive if you're buying it for home, personal use. I think Joe spent well north of $10k-20k for his.

I'd imagine if you could design and manufacture an inexpensive, fairly compact home version and partner with one of these new financing companies for ecommerce stores like Affirm, you could make a real run at it.

EDIT: Found this: Zen Float Tent - First Affordable Isolation Tank For Home

Funded $300k out of $90k goal, and after all this, their website looks pretty shitty and outdated. Not sure about their product.

@MTF Thanks for bumping this thread!

I heard about float tanks a few years ago but never got around to trying it.

I have a reservation for a 90 minute float session tomorrow. It’s an hour and half drive each way and $99. It’s going to be difficult to try it with no expectations. Expecting “nothing” is a huge expectation.

I’ll try skipping my morning coffee and hope I don’t get a caffeine withdrawal headache.

I spent an hour and a half in one on my birthday. I did one of the open tanks since the closed ones were taken. I would do it again but I would try a closed one instead.

That’s good advice! I didn’t shave this morning so I was good. The float center also had little packets of petroleum jelly to cover up cuts which I used for a mosquito bite that I must have scratched at some point.

My experience was very positive and I definitely plan on going back. If you sign up for rewards this spa starts you at a 20% off discount and every time you go within a month your next float is an additional 10% off the original price, up to 50% (Which would be $50 for a 90 minute float. Not too bad!).

I’m 6’5” so I bumped into the walls many times. I found crossing my ankles and folding my arms over my torso helped me avoid hitting the walls. However, it felt less immersive because I could clearly feel the contact between my ankles and between my arms and my chest. Towards the end of the 90 minutes I discovered that I could let me feet sink a bit and keep my arms at my side to really feel like I wasn’t touching anything.

The experience was very relaxing and it put me in a great mood.

I wasn’t sure whether I should focus on my breath, like I would while meditating, or if I should try to follow my thoughts.

I kept thinking about time. At the beginning I felt like time was going by quickly and at any second I would be forced to leave.

I thought about how I traded time at a job for money that I in turn traded for time in the tank.

    Time by myself, for myself.

Towards the end of my float I felt like I had been in there for a long time. I know I fell asleep briefly at least once. I started to feel a little stiff and restless so I started to move around and right then the light turned on, music began to play, and the pump turned on to start filtering the water for the next guest.

90 minutes seemed like the perfect time for me.

I didn’t have any hallucinations or anything. At one time I thought I was seeing things, but then realized there was just some light sneaking through the seam of the pod lid. I turned off all the lights in the room but the light from the hallway was coming in under the door. Once my eyes adjusted to the darkness I was able to notice that little bit of light outlining the edge of the pod lid. I think I will place a towel along the bottom of the door next time to block the light.

On a business note, this spa had three float pods and one cryogenic therapy station. The place was very clean and looked like it was recently constructed. I was one of three new customers at noon and when I left, the spa attendant was busy signing in four other new customers. When I was in the post-float lounge, I heard someone in the hallway talking who sounded like he was a regular customer.

I was impressed that a float spa could bring in that many new customers in Eastern North Carolina.

I’ve heard of people running these out of their houses before. If you wanted to buy a float pod for yourself you could probably come up with an AirBnB type model for float spas that would offset your cost and maybe even make you a little bit of profit.

Yes, supposedly it also has some detoxing effects as well.

I went to try a float tank with the intention of understanding and seeking more details about possibly setting up my own and also really curious if there is any benifit physically and mentally so I bought a 3 session package, an hour each. I became friendly with the employees and got some basic info because of that. I think it can be really profitable if it catches more traction with the media and amongst high performing athletes and individuals. I don’t know much about the cost of the tanks etc.

I went high 2 times on trees. 1 time on a CBD/THC oil (CBD dominant). (I’m a daily evening smoker tho)

Personally I don’t see myself doing it again soon or being a regular floater. It made me super tired after all 3 times and I was looking to gain energy from it if possible. Almost like it relaxed me too much and it even spilled over into the next day and I felt drained, I was also a little nauseous after.

(I’m a mediator, a gym goer, active lifestyle, healthy eater, high-energy type of guy)

Definitely happy I tried it! It didn’t have me sold on the concept to be too interested in it from a business aspect. Also interested if any once else had any bad or mediocre experiences with float tanks?

Yesterday I tried out a float tank for the first time and really enjoyed it. I was able to get comfortable right away and the feeling is so cool - it feels as if you are floating on a cloud. Struggled to fall asleep but I was comfortable the whole time. Definitely going to dry it again. Felt energized after being in it. Thank you for this awesome post!

I'm kind of curious of what it really does, it cost about 60 Euros in Paris, is it very useful ?

My life is a boat race and a real relaxation is well needed, even more for my back.

Going in a couple of hours for my third float (my previous two were several weeks ago - I don't have access to a float tank where I live) and it will be my longest float so far (the first one was 60 minutes and the second one 90, this one is two hours).

I'm really looking forward to it.

It made me realize how great of a business it can be: for the right person, once they try it once, they'll do it regularly. All you have to do is get enough people to try it, and then it should provide consistent income as long as you offer great service.

Granted, this won't work everywhere and it's probably a major pain in the a$$ to set it up (particularly the sanitation part), but as far as offline businesses go, I think it has a lot of potential (especially when you turn it into a franchise in a region that doesn't have many float centers yet).

Speaking of Joe Rogan and floating, has anyone seen his youtube/podcast where he talks with that comedian (his name escapes me) they start off about dogs and putting them down (euthanasia) ...very touching, sincerely.

Then and more importantly for this thread, the comic/person being interviewed talks about a heart attack or heart hospital visit while facing a high probability of death situation procedure and also reflects on talking to his mother who had an actual near death experience.

He then describes her near death experience as being on the operating table but "floating" from her body and how everything in her life was relieved and gone, like no more worries and no more caring or loss (I'm paraphrasing).

But the "floating" thing which I have never done (in near death or in a tank) rang an interesting cross over to death and reading what others describe here and wondering if death/floating has some similar references of relief from feeling, relief from thinking, relief from worrying, etc. and a total relief of life as we know it here on earth.

I died in one of my dreams once. I felt this exact same way. So accurate to the way I felt in the dream. I wonder if I nearly died in my sleep. It's the most peaceful feeling I've experienced by light years. My family and I was hit by a car and my body floated above the scene looking down at my crying family and being in a state of absolute bliss. No worry, no stress, no care, no sadness, no guilt, nothing. Just pure happiness beyond anything I've felt. I'm going to find the episode you're talking about now...

This movie is based on the director's experience doing DMT while reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Something happens to the main character which leads to him having an out of body experience following his sister around.

There is a float parlor near me. They have a per session price, then various levels of membership that entitle the member to however many sessions ranging from one or two a month up to unlimited. They also do cryo therapy.

This is a military town (Camp Lejeune) so I imagine there are substantial numbers of people being treated for ptsd. I'm not sure if the floating is helpful for that, but it seems likely. I do know that the cryo is used to help all sorts of physical damage and there are lots of guys with lots of injuries.

@ChrisV and I mentioned some of Ekhardt Tolle's work which is the idea that our REAL SELF is suffocated by what's called the EGO.

That's not the EGO in terms of "my car is better than yours" but the EGO in terms of our thought patterns; our thoughts about the past, the future, opinions, the whole mishmash of neurological farts that drown out our authentic spiritual self. The spiritual self is an OBSERVER to our thoughts, as if our brain was an entity on its own.

    I believe these TOOLS...

    DMT...
    Shrooms...
    Float Tanks...
    Meditation...
    Auyahasca...

Are all TOOLS to help you strip away the EGO, albeit temporarily, so you can see LIFE as a HUMAN without the EGO dominating control.

For anyone who has gotten value out of these "ego stripping" tools, I recommend reading Tolle's work. Even an agnostic (or atheist) might get some value out of them. He doesn't endorse any particular religion but more so is of the thought that all the religions are attempts at teaching the same thing, in different ways -- how the EGO (our brain patterns) are killing our spiritual selves.

This is why religions are good in their intent, but not in their execution. Humans are ruled by the EGO and not their BEING. What the human EGO touches becomes corrupted or distorted.

The idea of EGO is not a new concept. Originally came from eastern religions such as Taoism and Buddhism.

I wasn't suggesting it was. Tolle's work however has made it more consumable to Western cultures.

    Yes, DMT, Mushrooms, LSD

But there actually is a permanent way to get these effects, without meditation (although meditation is still a great thing to do on top of everything else.) But it is possible to get those effects permanently. You’re not going to trip balls all day, but you’ll just have a subtle sense of peace all day, which is actually our natural state.

    Let me explain...

Study: The Effects Of Serotonin On Spirituality

A team of Swedish researchers has found that the presence of a receptor that regulates general serotonin activity in the brain correlates with people's capacity for transcendence, the ability to apprehend phenomena that cannot be explained objectively. Scientists have long suspected that serotonin influences spirituality because drugs known to alter serotonin such as LSD also induce mystical experiences. But now they have proof from brain scans linking the capacity for spirituality with a major biological element.

DMT, Mushrooms, and LSD are Serotonin Agonists. You ingest them and they bind to Serotonin receptors. They give you an experience similar to what spiritual folks call ‘enlightenment’ (although it’s subtly different.)

In a normally functioning brain, serotonin may act as a mechanism through which the brain controls states of anxiety, aggression and temperament. Examining the levels of serotonin may reveal the conditions of the system and may reflect the temperament of the organism. If there is an abnormality in this system, it may be manifested in temperament and behavior. It has been demonstrated that low levels of serotonin turnover is correlated with aggressive behavior.

Insight on Fluoxetine: the Background and Issues Concerning a Controversial Designer Drug

There’s a very good chance when we talk about aggressive behavior, anxiety, etc it’s the same thing Tolle and other spritual teachers is talk about when he talks about “ego.” That aggressive behavior manifests into arguments with spouses, getting into fights with the bellhop, etc.

So Serotonin Transmission is raised by A) Spirituality, B) LSD, Mushrooms, etc .... but what if there were other ways, to more reliably raise serotonin levels.

Well that’s what I did... I struggled with depression a number of years, did meditation, and it had significant effects. But there was still an underlying depression there, as well as fibromyalgia (unexplained muscle pain,) and severe cluster headaches. When i took the supplements 5-HTP (5-hydrotroptophan) and L-Tryptophan that depression went away permanently. I haven’t had so much as a depressive hiccup in over 5 years. Why does it work?

Well those amino acids metabolize into Serotonin in the brain:

    600px-Trp-5ht-pathway.svg-2.png

(Note: a lot of people ask ‘why can’t i just take serotonin’ and the answer is that it doesnt cross the Blood Brain Barrier, so don’t bother... 5-HTP works fine)

So I took the 5-HTP for like 2 weeks, then I no longer needed it. Then I just maintained a good diet as you get L-Tryptophan naturally from diet. @MJ DeMarco , I know you’re not a fan of Julia Ross, but her book The Mood Cure is probably the best i’ve read on this topic. Her Mood Type Questionnaire helps people figure out what mood issues they have then shows them what to do link (you’ll see a check list on the right, just click back one of those to take the tests as the site isn’t very descriptive.) The test is really comprehensive too.

But bottom line for those who want to research it themselves: raise serotonin, attain peace. No, 5-HTP won’t make you trip balls, but it will just make you feel good in a normal, peaceful way.

Our ego is basically what philosopher Spinoza called the "modifications of the body"

A memory, an emotion is what is basically left when the world "touches us".

Can we get rid of the ego? No, it's gonna be there until our body dies. Because the ego is the "changes" of the body. But we can transcend it or experience a second order awareness of it.

What we call our "true self" is basically what's left when we transcend our bodily modifcations.

It's the eternal projection of our body that is always there. The "now".

Anything that helps us see this is good because it helps alter the brain in such a way where these modifications don't dominate our selves.
