Attractive Nuisances - Avoiding Shiny Object Syndrome

One of the things that came up this morning at breakfast was the posters, stickers, that are going up all over West Hollywood. The pride flag with the snake on it, and underneath it reads “#ShootBack". And I thought, being the entrepreneur that I am, "Those T-shirts are going to sell like crazy this summer. I wonder if shootback.com is available? How can I get the T-shirts made up fast - this week?"

And then I thought, "This is an attractive nuisance. If I were like Perez Hilton, I would need to be on top of every new fad and news article that came along. I'm not good at that. I don't want to do that. My skills are in the technical arena."

When I was on the track team in high school, we would chant "Eyes on the prize! Eyes on the prize!" Well, the prize is different for all of us now. I'm not the person to note a trend and take advantage of it. I'm not the gold miner, I'm the one who sells shovels.

I guess my point with this post is to make sure that we are aware of the attractive nuisances, and stay away from them.

On the other hand, if someone is interested, that website expired a year ago.
