Over 80% of Americans are Mag deficient: 80% of Americans Are Deficient in This Mineral That Controls Sugar Cravings | Eat This Not That

Deficiency is especially true for heavy coffee drinkers, as it affects Mag absorption (or so it seems):

Magnesium Deficiency can cause many mental health aliments.
Supplementing it can help ease a lot of mental health issues (and also help sleep):

I've begun supplementing 200 Mg Magnesium Citrate with every meal and I can't tell you how much of a turnaround it's made in my life, it's unbelievable.

Before, I'd get irritable on a good day, furious on bad days. Everywhere I'd go, there's a cloud of anger and nasty thoughts swirling around.

Now? Super calm, happy, grateful, can't be bothered. I've never taken SSRI's, but this is as close to what it must be like.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: Correcting a deficiency is x100000 more effective than adding ANYTHING (Workouts, Meditating, Journaling, etc.).

(Those are all important, but it wasn't the problem that needed to be corrected).

I've struggled with Anger, Irritability, Anxiety, Depression literally all my life, and all it took was correcting a deficiency to turn it around.

Now I'm on a solid baseline level of mood. I'd highly suggest you do your research and give it a shot!

I'll second this. Started supplementing Mag a couple years ago. I can testify to all those benefits written above.

I believe there are some side effects for taking too much, and it is something you should slowly ramp up, otherwise you might spend your first two days in the loo.

On the coffee point, swap it out for Green Tea and help your body fight the fat. I switch back and forth between coffee and tea, and I definitely feel better and lose more weight the weeks I'm drinking tea.

I've started taking magnesium in the evenings before bed - man do I get quality sleep nowadays. I sometimes just wish I could pass this quality of sleep onto my friends and family whos quality of life is in the gutter simply because they haven't embraced deep sleep into their lives.

Keep fighting the good fight - this thread and the information contained will be useful to many, especially the exhausted multi-taskers on this forum who are killing themselves to break out of the rat-race.

I'm someone that actually tracks mineral deficiencies via blood tests, and since I eat A lot of sesame, I have been confirmed to have VERY high levels of magnesium.

As in on the very upper end of normal.

Sorry guys, but I can't say it's made me any less angry, irritable, anxious, or depressed than usual.

But something that HAS made a huge difference, however, is taking 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day and being more mindful about my sleeping habits. That plus:
  • Turmeric (anti-inflammatory)
  • Boswellia Serrata (anti-inflammatory)
  • Fish oil (anti-inflammatory but salmon only, don't take cod liver)
  • L-glutamine (heals and prevents leaky gut - this shit is often the root of most illnesses and affects your brain)
  • Propolis (anti-inflammatory, antiviral)
  • Daily exercise (as much as I love push-ups, WALKING at least 10K steps a day does WONDERS for your body. Once you stop moving, you're now officially dying)
Inflammation and a lack of movement/proper oxygenation of the cells are the main killers.

Oh, and cold showers. As cold as it can get. Where I'm from this means water that's 4°C (39°F) and I count to 300 before I get out - so approximately 5 minutes.

No anger, anxiety, or depression can survive that.

So… after 4 days…
- sleep is deeper and longer
- dreaming each night (no nightmares, just regular weird stuff)
- tired more during the day, not sure why!
- taking it as a supplement, not topical (I did that for a week and while it could have been placebo effect, it did make me sleep better. Problem was, the skin got dry with the minerals, not a pleasant feeling)
- I didn’t do any blood tests or anything of the type. I’m totally ok with just experimenting on myself.

conclusion? Will continue for a few weeks and then stop to see the difference and later decide if the change is temporary or permanent.

But there is a problem with supplements for magnesium - digestive track destroys too much. Taking in more will cause bathroom runs.
So… what I do every day is apply it on skin! Topical application is better absorption and same result. Better sleep, better mood.
Have a go of it guys! Dilute a conversation of magnesium with distilled water and just apply to skin before you go to sleep at night.

Personal experience, with Epsom salt baths, the ingestion is a better outcome for me.
Did you guys test yourself for magnesium deficiency before?
No.

When I looked into what foods I was eating, I found I didn't generally eat much that had it, so I assumed I was deficient. I eat a lot more beans, nuts, leafy greens, and avocados now. And I still supplement. For a time I got away from it, but after a few weeks I just noticed I felt more stiff, less relaxed.

I keep hearing about this every now and then so am finally going to give it a try.

I quit coffee a few months back for about 6 weeks and it was amazing. Unfortunately started again when I was moving house lol. But... during those 6 weeks, I was so happy to find myself yawning and barely able to keep my eyes open from about 930pm instead of the usual 1am.

Looking forward to testing this one out.

this is very eye opening.

I take medicine that actually causes magnesium deficiency.

I'm going to try to get more magnesium, this is a much needed post.

Yup, bathroom runs are the biggest risk with magnesium chloride (used topically It's fine, but if ingested has pretty severe laxative effects).

That's why I've taken Mag Citrate orally and continue to do so. The absorption is good enough and there's no negative side effects for me, even at high doses (maybe a slight drunk feeling if anything. In which case back off on it). People also praise Mag Glycinate, but anecdotally it causes drowsiness.

There's a lot of ways to slice this lemon. Do your research and experiment!

This is the one I take:

IMG_20210827_083401.jpg

1) It says, that it helps with sleeping, but what I've found was that taking it at night makes it impossible to sleep, so instead I switched to taking at noon.
2) After 2-3 hours it gives a weirdly high feeling of being present. Not necessarily focused or excited, but super present, to the point that it might make you somewhat paranoidish.
3) I did not see any difference in physical performance.
4) Get ready for some wild dreams at night. I've read some people have extreme nightmares, but I have more of a thrillers.

Took it for 3 months after reading this.

For context, I wake up at around 5AM. I used to have a big crash around 1-2PM everyday, where I would be incredibly foggy, tired, and unable to get work done; literally had to sleep on the spot for 30+ minutes to recover. I would also be very irritated and depressed in general during the whole afternoon and evening.

I took marine magnesium, 300mg in the morning every day:
- The above crash is completely gone. I also feel much more present and aware throughout the day, and way more relaxed in general. Flipside is that I also feel more tired at the end of the day, but in a good way.
- Started dreaming again.
- Used to have problems focusing on anything, and zoning out frequently throughout the day, with magnesium this almost never happens and I can focus much longer.

Overall it's been pretty positive, but your mileage may vary. I'll experiment a bit more with it and see what comes up.

Is it a panacea for anxiety, insomnia, and Mood issues? I'm not sure. I don't think you can draw a conclusion from limited anecdotal experiences from reddit. But even if it is the placebo effect, all that matters is you feel better now than you did before, and I'm happy that you and others do.
Yeah it's not a silver bullet, but was a huge first step in fixing a whole host of other issues. I'd say it helped me get to a place mentally to address those things. Cutting caffeine and extended breathing + meditation practices (sometimes 1+ Hours) for instance, helped a lot too after I started supplementing mag. YMMV

Nope, but I noticed getting way more irritable regardless of circumstances. I drink a ton of coffee, and cutting it out didn't help. Tried everything and just gave Magnesium a shot, not really expecting anything to come of it. Couldn't have gone better.

Found this awesome article describing the three different kinds of mag. Glycinate appears to be the one to get for good moods, stress reduction, better sleep, etc.

Just grabbed some Magnesium Citrate 1400mg tablets that supposedly have 200mg elemental magnesium in them.

1000+ 5 Star reviews on Amazon.

Recently (1 week) started taking vitamin 3000iu Vitamin D3 and Cod Liver Oil tablets and haven't really noticed a difference, even though everyone said it was magnificent.

Let's see what happens with these Magnesium ones.

It's pretty normal on magnesium, as I've said, many stop taking it due to heavy nightmares.
Hmmm, didn't know that. Maybe the doze you are taking is too high?

I'll report back after I try the supplement version.

What I can share today is that I stopped using topical application and slept worse. Maybe skin is bad at absorbing the magnesium and maybe it was a placebo effect on me, but I can tell the difference. Next up is the supplement test :)

I've been taking magnesium for years simply because I know it is essential, and it helps with muscle recovery.

That said, I can't say I noticed any difference when I started taking it because I can't remember that long ago.
