Pitch the proposed compensation plan to your company. Do not mention this new software. Only show examples of where you have saved money and ask for a slice of the savings. They will think you want 15% of $120k...... Then you implement and save them $3m / year.

I have considered that before but I don't know if the risk outweighs the reward. There are a few people in command between me and someone that could actually take action on this. I am (of course) more qualified than my supervisor (but his kid plays baseball with his managers kid), so as soon as I go over his head he is going to get defensive. He is super paranoid about losing his job because we have layoffs all the time as a result of mergers and acquisitions. I offered to make a better system in 1 week for our team to use for tracking instead of Access and he refused to even though the entire team wanted it. He is good at BS-ing and could probably convince the VP that I don't even know what I'm talking about if he got word of it. He lies so much I think he even believes it himself.

I definitely can't ask for a share of the savings up front without mentioning anything else - we have brought that up as a team before and it got shut down quickly. You may or may not be amazed at some of the things that go on there. Someone here agreed to help me sell it once complete. I'm in the middle of a home renovation right now so I can't pack up to another company right this minute.
